Esperanto has 16 basic rules. Supposedly, English has 12 basic rules, but there are many irregulars and those rules don't cover some important elements. Even if the native language is very different from English, it takes Esperanto learners about a tenth of the time to become fluent at an intermediate level compared to non-native English learners.
