In the winter of 1986, I was in the 8th grade. We lived in Mount Clemens, Michigan. It was a good size suburb ; fifty miles outside of Detroit. The temperature was -10 degrees Fahrenheit. I had just rode the school bus to the bus stop half a block from our house.
As I walked into the house. I collapsed to my knees freezing. My step-mom was home and saw me go down.
The first thing she did was ask me what was wrong. I barely let out the word cold. Then she turned to my older brother and asked him to make me a cup of hot cocoa.
