Mum Must Not Know
Binta and Jummy were best of friends in high school. They both were in the administrative class. Everyone knew them for their decency. Despite attending a school where there were a lot of ill-bred students, they were very upright. They held strictly to their principles.
As alike as the two were in maintaining good standards, their reasons for doing so were different. While Binta was doing so because she feared her parents who were strict disciplinarians, Jummy was doing so because she was taught that was the right way to live.
During their final year in high school, while they were preparing for their final exams, one of their classmates, Janet, suggested they all study at her house on weekend. Janet's twin siblings, Philip and Philemon, had graduated from the same school and had been the best students then. Janet suggested that they let the twin brothers teach them. It sounded like a great suggestion to others since Janet herself was intelligent and she had claimed that her excellence was a result of her brothers' teachings.
Only Binta and Jummy hesitated before consenting. Their mates had started teasing them. One had called them Mums' pets before they consented.
After school, Binta expressed her fears to Janet about telling her parents. Jummy said they should both not go if she would not tell her parents. However, Binta thought it would not be good to be the reason why Jummy would not go. They decided to find a believable lie to tell their parents.
Later that day, Binta lied to her parents that they were given group work and her group were to meet at Janet's house.
“Why would your teacher do that?”
“When are you starting and when are you stopping?”
“I hope you're not going there to play.”
”Give me a phone call every ten minutes while you're there.”
“If I discover that you play away your time over there, I'd not get you what I promised you.”
Binta heaved a heavy sigh after leaving her parents' presence.
When Binta and Jummy got to Janet's house, only one third of their classmates came. Many of those who had teased them had stayed home.
