SCARS OF THE HEART
The day was cool and airy, slight breeze blowing every now and then, ruffling the leaves on the trees and moving the washed clothes on the line close to the fence back and forth. Adaugo lay on the bamboo hammock tied between the two mango trees beside the house. She closed her eyes, lifting her face to the breeze. She sighed contentedly, ignoring the voices she could hear coming from inside the house and enjoying the perfect weather as she started to fall asleep. She had slept like a baby the night before, without fear or worry, so she was surprised that she will be falling asleep again so early in the day.
Soon, the voices could be heard coming out to the front door of the house. The front door opened and the two men that were discussing in the house, stood a few feet from the hammock and continued their conversation.
Still, Adaugo ignored the men, rolling to her side in the hammock, she tried to shut out the voices. She found herself unable to ignore the voices so close to her. Also, being the topic of the conversation, she wanted to know what the outcome of their meeting was.
Adaugo sat up on the hammock, giving up on her attempt at nonchalance and watched the men. Her brothers. They were discussing her sudden return from her husband's house. Dim, her older brother had opened the door to loud knocks late into the night before, only to see their only sister at the door with luggages all around her. Dim had immediately called Lota their other brother for the urgent meeting.
Adaugo sat on the hammock and watched them argue over if she should go back to her husband or not.
They had called her into the sitting room the moment Lota arrived that morning. A woman leaving her husband's house was a huge shame. Not just to the woman, but her family. So Dim and Lota expected Adaugo's reasons for leaving her husband to be a matter of life and death. They had asked her to leave them to discuss, after listening to her reasons.
The wedding had been near perfect. The venue was the best in town. The wedding dress was the most expensive they could find. There was every kind of food...
