Conversation on a bus.
I am sitting peacefully in the state operated public bus, after a tiresome day in college. Headphones on ,empty bus and empty roads is surely one of those good days when one enjoys the ride back to home
“This is pathetic! This always happens to me."
“Ah! She shouts like the world belongs to her, thus no one would mind even if her voice screeches inside our head and bursts it.” These are the only thoughts I have as I see a lady in her mid fiftes enter the bus. I roll my eyes and look out of the window. I increased the volume, and continued to listen to music trying to ignore that lady to my best ability.
“What do you mean next time? You can't do this. Pathetic.”
The more I increased the volume, that lady's sound seemed to increase. It is annoying. I shook my head trying to ignore it but it isn'tpossible.
On my right there is a window and on left an empty seat. That lady came and sat next to me, I mumbled in low tone, “Of all the empty places and all the buses she has to sit next to me! I hope, if I throw her phone out of the window, she would jump out chasing it and give me some peace.”
“Do you have some sense? What will I tell them? Pathetic.” She is little plump, fair, bob haircut and about 5ft tall. She conversed in Kannada and English, but English has a Kannada accent.
"This is neither your car nor your house,
but a public transport,has a
decorum to be maintained and a fare to be paid.
Show me your pass or buy a ticket before it's too late.”
The conductor is in a unusual happy mood, probably because of the empty bus on an easy Saturday.
I would travel back from college in this bus route and often have him as the conductor, hence for past an year I had noticed that he would often talk to passengers in the native language whenever he was in good mood.
"Why don't they get off the bus and have a little chat? Now they will talk all the way.” | wondered and tried to resume my indulgence in the music but I knew it wouldn't happen with their loud voices right next to me.
"What do they think? I tell you these people are pathetic, just pathetic. One ticket to bus depot, near the Mall.” Saying this, the lady handed over the money to the conductor.
While handingover the ticket, the conductor started a conversation,
"You don't seem to be happy,
what is it that makes you angry?
The sun is shining bright on a fine Saturday,
why do I see you frowning like it's a Monday?"
"How shall i tell you!”, She took the ticket and threw it inside the purse. She cut the call and continued shouting.
"Crazy women, she thinks her problem will be solved if she shouts. If I shout at her maybe be she will shut her mouth”, resting myhead on the seat, I continued to listen to music.
The conductor sat on the seat front of us as there weren't any more passengers to attend to.
"Your shouting isn't very pleasant, look around
Peopling are frowning because of your sound.
Neither to me nor to the passengers, you seem fine.
Tell me what's the problem, I can spare an ear for some time."
"Ok, listen. The boy's family is supposed to go to the girl's.house today. On last Tuesday, I had discussed with both families then fixed the date and time. Now, the.boy's family call me, an hour before the fixed time and give some nonsense. Pathetic.”
The topic.seemed interesting, so I switched off the music but let the earphones remain in my ears. Time to time I was nodding my head, so it seems like I am listening to music, hoping that neither the lady nor the conductor realize that I am hearing their conversation.
" Oh, you.are a marriage broker,
A circus in which you are the owner.
I know problems of arranging a marriage,
no wonder.you are in such an anger rage.
Now what,.did they refuse to go to the girl's place?"
“No worse ! Boy's parents called to tell me that the boy isn't going with them to girl's house! He has some office work, so he can't go. They expect me to call the girl's family and tell them. Now, the girl was in another state and had to travel overnight to meet this boy's family because I asked her parents to call her. Will the girl marry the parents? Pathetic!”
"HmmSerious but a funny situation.
In you view what's the solution?"
“ No solution. See the boy isn't that good looking, hence not appealing at start but descent natured. So l influenced the girl's family to meet him and then decide. Actually I over praised him, if he doesn't go now won't they think I lied. They don't have common sense. After all who takes a marriage proposal to a family without the boy?"
“So now what?
Will you call
and tell it all?
Or let it be
the way it is,
And let the
girl's family call."
“I forced the girl to travel from other state to meet this family, and they aren't taking the boy! Idiots. This is the reason that no one's really accepting their proposals, they have no common sense.”
The conversation kept in getting interesting, it is also the dialog and expression that kept my ear stuck.
“ HELLO MADAM!" The conductor shouted, I too wonder why all of a sudden he is shout at the lady.
"Remove the earphones
from you ear,
Your stop has come, won't you get down here?
Where are you lost?
Don't you realize, you need to get down."
I realize that he is addressing me. I got up, grinned and ran out of the bus. I had to leave an interesting conversation in middle and though not noticed overhearing, but it is embarrassingly to be thrown out of a conversation.
The last I could.hear was the conductor scolding me in a polite sarcastic tone. I probably would always wonder what reaction the girls family would have!
