Chandragupta 2 Triumph Over the Saka King. "Who Named Vikram Samvat and How Did It Originate from Malva Samvat?"
In approximately 380 AD, within the regions of Gujarat and Malwa of the Magadhan Empire, a significant event occurred. Emperor Samudragupta had passed away, leaving his less capable son, Ramagupta, to inherit the throne. Recognizing Ramgupta’s weakness, the Saka King demanded that the emperor send his wife, Queen Dhruvadevi as a token of submission.

Chandragupta-2 Bold Strategy

Enraged by this audacious demand, Chandragupta-2, the younger brother of Ramagupta, resolved to defend the queen and defy the Saka King. He formulated a daring plan: a palanquin would be sent to the Saka King, ostensibly carrying Queen Dhruvadevi. However, the palanquin was secretly occupied by Chandragupta-2 and his warriors, all disguised as women.

The Ambush

When the palanquin procession arrived at the Saka camp, the Saka King, eager to see the queen, came out personally to greet her. At the critical moment, Chandragupta-2 and his warriors sprang from the palanquin and launched a surprise attack. The Saka King, taken by surprise, was swiftly killed by Chandragupta-2, leading to a decisive victory over the Sakas.

Outcome and Consequence

In the aftermath of the Saka King’s death, Chandragupta-2 led his forces to a comprehensive victory, reclaiming and incorporating the provinces of Sindh, Kaccha (Kutch), Saurashtra (Kathiawar), Gujarat, and Malwa into the Magadhan Empire. This courageous act earned Chandragupta-2 the title of Vikramaditya, and he ascended the throne of Magadha. The people of Ujjaini (Ujjain), formerly the Saka capital, celebrated his triumph with a grand festival.

To honor his victory over the Sakas, Chandragupta-2 renamed the Malava Samvat calendar to Vikram Samvat and established Ujjain as the capital of the empire’s western part.

The Final Conflict

During a celebratory feast held in Chandragupta’s-2 honor, Ramagupta, unable to tolerate his brother’s rising popularity, attempted to assassinate him. However, in the ensuing struggle, Ramagupta was killed. Queen Dhruvadevi subsequently married Chandragupta-2, who then officially ascended the throne, marking the beginning of a prosperous reign.
