When the only thing you've ever heard in your life is your own thoughts, you begin to see, smell and taste things most of your friends do not. The pollen from the heart of the tulips, the flash of the corona just before sunrise or right after, and the sweet and salty taste of fresh dripping rain as it hits the resin of the maple trees.

An utter silence when around nature gives one the unique opportunity to feel the breath and air of each animal as it inhales, and exhales. To taste and smell the same breath of a lioness after a fresh kill; there's absolutely NOTHING like it! She hunts with grace and style. When she catches her prey, there's an exhilaration not matched in the animal kingdom, like ecstasy. And she wallows in a pool of blood, lapping her reward as her cubs feast on the warm flesh easily torn from dead bones.

Have you ever felt the joy of little bear cubs while suckling on their momma's milk? It runs wet throughout their furry chin and neck. It is warm to the touch, and retains its heat even in the belly. The cry of the screech owl reverberates in the night air. Hissing snakes disturbing the unmoving, unfeeling fungus. It's shed skin, far removed. And rhe cactus flower as it buds only at daybreak, then sizzles in the morning light. The way it blossoms and ejects its seed, though it knows they too will soon be denied.

I did not know what was about to happen.

I've never had a cellphone, and I'm not techno savvy; in fact, saying techno savvy is the closest I've ever been. I've always lived in the jungles just off of South Africa going to and fro from the mainland. But today I was sailing to meet my South American friend Babat. She was a gorgeous beauty since the day we met. She was not deaf, but was blind from birth. So we really hit it off; I was her eyes, she was my ears. And our symbiotic relationship gave our friendship an authenticity most people never get in life. She on the other hand was EXTREMELY techno knowledgeable. Always had to have the latest everything. Gadget, phone, you name it.

She told me about the Nova, and the 24 hours. But by the time she did, I had already felt the change in the air. Much much hotter, the air felt thick, and the flesh of the sun baked into my nauseated nostrils.

I threw up several times.

But I adjusted after smelling a burning hyssop. root; and tried to wrap my brain about what was really happening. All around me everything was inundated with heat and a scorched earth smell. They invited me to one last meal, but I simply wasn't hungry anymore. I started to cry as I felt my hair start to burn; it was never strong like I wanted it to be. She tried as hard as she could to douse it. The more she did though, the hotter and more fierce that it became.

Finally, she too was engulfed in flames, and I could do nothing about it. I watched her in silent horror burn to death. But my grief was short lived, as I too began to catch fire.

But since I had my sight and could see, I ran over to the ocean to take one last plunge to save my life.

And that heated water, was the last thing this body ever touched.

"Sometimes it takes a major world catastrophe for us to wake up to what's happening around us and unify around each other. War, Famine, Plague. These are just three main ones. Ahh but there are some Natural and Unnatural Disasters that will too."
