CORPSE (Part-4 The End)
After two days of constant thinking, I decided to visit Mr David Williams. There was not much time left before I had to shift from this place, so I had to at least tell him what I had found. “Hello Steve. So have you made any progress in this case?”, he asked.
“I am sorry Mr David. This case is leading nowhere. I tried to think of every possible combination of incidents which might have occurred but there are always something which proves it wrong. Mark Carter seems the closest one but his behavior doesn't seem like a criminal one…”
I could see a smile on his face which immediately changed after I said, “... That's what you expected me to say Mr David isn't?”
“What are you saying Steve?”
“In this case I just felt there is some character missing from the story. Edward can't commit this crime as he was just very drunk to plan a complex plot like this. Thomas Owen seems innocent because of the evidence his mother collected. And while there is no evidence in favor of Mark, but his behavior didn't feel suspicious to me at all…”
“...I came up with a theory. Let's call this missing character X. So this person X that day broke into their house at night. I don't know why but it was some deeper reasoning considering this much for a robbery seems too much. X first injected Mark with sleeping drugs and then called Jessica for some talk. Probably inside house X tried to choke Jessica and beat her. Jessica somehow managed to get away but she probably got temporary vocal paralysis out of shock or choking which explains why she did not scream …”
“... Jessica ran some distance but was eventually killed by X who used some stone or something similar to hit on her head. This distance is probably very close to her house, otherwise she must have asked neighbors for help. Edward was the only person who saw that chase but because of being drunk he really messed up the information. After killing her, X put Jessica in a jute bag and asked Thomas to dispose of her body. X later on returned to Jessica's house and set her house on fire. X probably wanted to kill Mark also but at the same time wanted to remove the signs of his presence. So the best way to do that was fire.”
“So this is just a theory isn't it? Who is this X you are talking about”, he said by raising his eyebrows.
“This is exactly what took me two days. It is exactly the problem which I faced. There were barely any clues to get this verified. But then I realized it was just too obvious from the start Mr David. I haven't worked on any murder case for two years. I was also about to shift to Paris. You giving me this case just screams you don't want it to get solved. You could have easily given this to some better person and not me…”
I got up from my chair and turned around. I continued, “... I started an investigation on you and your family Mr David. At first I felt maybe you are that X but I could not think of any possible reason to do this. Then after changing my focus, it wasn't hard to see that X is your daughter.”
He furiously said, “What proof do you have to come up with such a false statement.”
“Not much, but the fact that your daughter moved to the USA immediately after Jessica's death. Also her anger issues made me feel suspicious…” while I was saying I felt weird and turned around just to see Mr David pointing his new rifle towards me. I did feel scared at that moment but I am not an easy target.
I said, “Kill me if you want Mr David. But it's too late, your daughter is already in US police custody and she has accepted her crime. She has told police that she loved Mark but was furious at his marriage. That's why she killed Mark's wife and your niece, Jessica.”
He was shocked. He put his rifle away and fell back on his chair. He held his head, with tears in his eyes and started muttering, “So even after all my hard work and effort I could not save her. I could not save her…”
“You have really chosen the very wrong person for this investigation Mr David. Even if I don't work for 50 years more, my detective skills will remain the same. You underestimating my skills is definitely the worst mistake you could have made.”
“Now what? You are going to get me arrested as well”, Mr David said.
“Is that even a question? Attempting to hide a crime is the same as committing the crime. So allow me Mr David. I am going.”
While I was exiting his room, I decided to tell him, “By the way Mr David, I was here just to confirm my theory. You and your daughter will be arrested soon. Au revoir Mr David.”
