Broken World Part 2

The next morning, David stood in the corridor outside of Sarah’s room while Dr. Edward Baines spoke to her. He paced back and forth in the corridor while he waited to speak to the psychiatrist. Ethel and Captain Turner came back by to check on David and Sarah during the time Dr. Baines spoke with Sarah. He told them what little he knew and what Dr. Cain had told him last night. Finally, Dr. Baines stood and stepped out into the corridor.
“How is she? What is wrong with her?” David peppered Dr. Baines with questions.
“Well, it’s hard to say in one visit,” answered Dr. Baines. He stood at five feet eleven inches and he weighed one hundred eighty-eight pounds. The forty-six-year-old Director of the Psychiatric Department for West Midland Memorial Hospital had black hair and blue eyes.
“What do you mean?” David asked while they walked down the corridor.
“She claims to have no memory of the trip from Afghanistan or anything else that happened the last twenty-four or so hours. She truly believes that before she woke up that she was in Afghanistan,” Dr. Baines pulled off his glasses and wiped them off and slid them back onto his face.
“What do you mean ‘she claims’?”
“It could be that she’s faking the loss of memory to cover up her embarrassment,” claimed Dr. Baines.
“Faking because of her embarrassment? What would she have to be embarrassed about?”
“It’s possible that she slept walked out of the house,” suggested Dr. Baines.
“And laid down in the ditch? Is that even possible?” wondered David.
“You would be surprised what a person can and will do while sleep walking.”
“What if she isn’t faking the memory loss and she really thought she was still in Afghanistan, can that be a result of PTSD?” asked David.
“It’s quite possible. I won’t know unless I talk to her some more. I would like to set up weekly sessions with her.”
“Can her PTSD be treated?” questioned David.
“Absolutely, it can be treated with medication and counselling. But, I wouldn’t know for sure unless I can set up weekly sessions with her.”
“Consider it done,” suggested David.
“It can’t be your decision. It has to be her decision,” Dr. Baines suggested as he stopped in front of a set of elevator doors.
“Why is that? I’m her husband, can’t I decide for her?”
“No. She’s not a danger to herself or anyone else. So, she’s the only one that can make that decision,” replied Dr. Baines.
“I think she’ll do it.”
“Well, when I suggested seeing her on a weekly basis, she turned me down. Mr. Mitchell, if she has PTSD and she doesn’t get help, it will get worse. Normally, when a person that’s been diagnosed with PTSD doesn’t get help, it usually ended in suicide,” Dr. Baines stepped into the elevator and the doors closed.
David turned and walked back towards Sarah’s room. He needed to find a way to convince her to get the help she needed. Perhaps, Captain Turner and Ethel can help him find a way.

Two Weeks Later…

Sarah Mitchell walked down a narrow alley in line with the soldiers in her unit. They slowly moved through the alley, checking every crook and cranny for anyone that might be hiding. As she approached a doorway, she heard a noise. She made a clicking sound to halt the other soldiers, but they didn’t hear her. She pressed her back against the building beside the doorway. Her unit continued down the alleyway, not realizing she had stopped. She tried to get their attention, but she didn’t want to make too much noise just in case the noise she heard was a terrorist hiding in the doorway.
In her head, she counted to three and she...
