A supernatural experience: A Short story

I am Ramesh, a cab driver. I want to share a nerve wrenching experience that I wish no one should ever face in life.

Memories of that dreadful night are as fresh as a dew. It is the story of December 2012.

For supporting my family I used to work at night also. I still remember it was an unpleasantly cold winter’s night of Jamshedpur. The moon was sheltered by the murky looming clouds. It seemed that nature was indicating that something dreadful was on my way. My mother insisted on me not to go out but I didn’t budge. I went to work.

I was standing on Tata Nagar railway station for providing pick and drop facility to travelers in exchange for money. I was looking for a passenger from the past one hour, but I was not able to get one. When I was about to leave, suddenly a lady said ‘bhaiya jugsalai chaloge?’

When I looked at her I was dumbstruck by her exceptional beauty. I had never seen such beauty in my life. She had a comely figure which stemmed thin. Her curvilinear waist didn’t surprise me as much as the saffron tint to her complexion. She doesn’t seem to be a normal lady. I was enchanted by her beauty.

Her crescent-shaped eyebrows inclined as she saw me staring at her.

She said-‘bhaiya chaloge?’

Without a second thought, I said yes. I kept her luggage and started my cab.

As I started galloping the streets, the darkness grew thicker. Moon and stars were covered under clouds. The bone-chilling breeze blew right my head. It was around 2 am in the night.

I was mesmerized by her aura and was pondering how to start a conversation.

Suddenly breaking the sheer silence she asked me to close the glass of the window as the breeze was bone-chilling.

I did as instructed saying.

‘Mam, it’s very late, you know nowadays it’s not safe to travel in these odd hours’.

She grinned saying ‘don’t worry I am used to all these and know how to protect myself’.

I smiled and kept driving staring at her from the rear-view mirror. She looked divine.

On reaching the landmark I asked her about the direction to reach the exact location.

I followed her instruction and reached the destination.

The place seemed to be very unusual, her villa seemed to be abandoned. She asked me to wait as she was bringing the cash from the house. I obeyed. There was water dripping from the roof rhythmically generating a melancholic melody. The door hinges were all rusted and the glass windows were all shattered. All looked scary and threatening. The stillness of the villa sent shivers down my spine. I don’t know, I was having a very eerie feeling, but I ignored my instincts. I kept on waiting and dozed off unknowingly.

In the morning at 7’0 clock when I woke up. I saw a person standing in front of my car.

He asked me ‘are bhai marna hai kya, jo yahan so rhe ho?’

I was bamboozled and narrated last night's incident to him.

The person revealed me a dark truth which I had never expected. Within seconds my world was turned upside down. A gush of shiver ran down my nerves as soon as he told me that the owner (the lady) of the villa died a few years back in a railway accident. From that time the villa was haunted.

I was shocked and the sequence of last night events started playing in my mind. It was hard to believe the man. To confirm I went to a house in vicinity and asked about that lady and villa. They confirmed the same and showed me her picture. I recognised her easily. I was shocked and petrified that I spent last night with a ghost.

I rushed my car home and narrated the whole story to my family. It took quite long for me to recover mentally and physically from the after-effects of the incident. From that very day, I stopped working late nights.
