Prakriti and my Dear Amma
A tribute to Mother Nature and to my dear mother.

As per Hindu Mythology, creation (Srusthi) happens when the Soul (Purusha) combines with nature (Prakriti). This beautiful creation is life itself. The mother of all living things is Prakriti, a.k.a Mother Nature. Billions of years ago the Big Bang happened. Several billion years later, a new star was born-the Sun. Later, when the earth was born, it was not born as a beautiful baby, rather full of molten lava. Mother Earth was later endowed with a gift of water to evolve and sustain life. What started off as water plants and bacteria, evolved into bigger and better species of animals, including humans. What a great evolution Prakriti had to go through to provide a life sustaining environment for us. Mother Earth became the most beautiful manifestation of Prakriti. Mother Earth is poetry in the deep silence of space. She provides all the necessary ingredients for the entire ecosystem to sustain life and flourish. All the living organisms: bacteria, plant, animal, and the human being must be greatly indebted to Prakriti for providing each of us an opportunity to live and enjoy life.

Every mother in this universe is an embodiment of Prakriti, and they each possess a varied combination of the various characteristics of Mother Nature such as patience, perseverance, creativity, and the protector in them.

My dear mother Janaki is an embodiment of compassion, contentment, and patience. She has instilled in all her children good morals and values. There is not one person who knows her that has seen her lose her temper or feel frustrated at any time. She was always content, calm, and smiling. Moreover, she had the quality of being a very practical and purposeful person as well. For example, she would distribute sweets, books, and pencils to children in need during Dussehra, as an offering to Goddess Saraswathi (Goddess of learning). She used to see God in children and all the members of her family. Even though she came from a very religious background, she would only pray to God when she used to go to bed at night. When she would lay down in bed and close her eyes to sleep, she would think of God and pray. She could feel the divinity in the air around her in the silence of the night. She would thank Him for everything He has given and would pray for the protection of her family. She would never ask for anything for herself. Another example of her practicality and love for her son was seen when I used to go after 10 PM to a public telephone booth near our house to make an out-of-state call to a headhunter for my overseas job. This was before the cell phone days, and we could not afford to have a landline in our house, and the phone charges were much cheaper after 10 PM. Without fail, she would fold her handkerchief neatly and give it to me. She would ask me to wipe the phone handset clean before I could use it to make the call. As soon as I got home, she would toss the kerchief for washing and prepare me half a cup of tea to drink. Now, looking back, I think that her touch would sanitize the handkerchief and her love would convert caffeine into melatonin for me.

After she passed away and her ashes were dispersed into the holy Kaveri River, she returned to her eternal home and became one with Prakriti again. She now manifests herself as the various elements of nature for me. I experience her warmth in the morning sunshine, I experience her touch when I go and stand in the rain, I hear her sweet voice when I listen to the chirping of the birds, and I see her beaming smile in a rainbow. I feel her presence inside of me as she continues to tighten and finetune the strings of my heart for it to produce the music of love.

We refer to our mother by various names such as Maa, Ammi, Amma, Mom, Aayi etc. Each of these names is so serene and peaceful. The first word that comes out of our mouth when we are in pain or agony or simply relieved or exhilarated is mother. We also pray to Maa Durga and Santoshi Mata when we need protection. Our mother is the umbilical cord between our existence and divinity itself.

We should all be so grateful for this beautiful relationship that we have with our mother and Prakriti.

Amma, I pray for you to be my mother in every lifetime. I love you forever!

Be it Mother Nature or our biological mother, we owe them our love and gratitude.
