Life’s Imperfect Edits
#WritcoStoryPrompt125
Jenny stared at the screen, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. The blank page on her word processor seemed to taunt her, but she was determined to finish her novel. She began to type, words flowing freely. When she realized she had made a mistake, a quick tap on the backspace key erased it instantly.

“Thank goodness for undo buttons,” she thought, smiling. She continued writing, her story evolving with each keystroke. Errors were easily corrected with a simple command. A misplaced word? Highlight, delete, retype. A clunky sentence? Cut, paste, rewrite. On her computer, mistakes were mere inconveniences, easily and swiftly fixed.

As she worked, Jenny couldn’t help but think about the mistakes she had made in her own life. The time she argued with her best friend over something trivial. The opportunity she missed because she was too afraid to take a risk. The relationship that fell apart because she couldn’t find the right words. In real life, there was no backspace key, no undo button. Apologies had to be made face-to-face, regrets had to be lived with, and broken things couldn’t always be fixed.

Sighing, Jenny saved her document and leaned back in her chair. The screen flickered off, and she was left staring at her reflection in the dark monitor. She wondered how different things might be if she could edit her life as easily as she edited her writing.

But perhaps, she mused, the permanence of life’s choices made them more meaningful. Each mistake was a lesson learned, each regret a chance to grow. And though it was hard, maybe that’s what made real life beautiful. It was imperfect, but it was real.

Jenny stood up, a new determination in her heart. She couldn’t erase her past mistakes, but she could learn from them. And just maybe, she could start writing a better future, one thoughtful decision at a time.
