When we think of Kashmir, the first thing that often comes to mind is its breathtaking scenic beauty. However, few people are aware of Kashmir's significant association with the first trade union movement in 1865. It was the shawl weavers of Kashmir who bravely took to the streets of Srinagar to protest against oppressive taxation policies. Tragically, during this protest, 28 workers lost their lives, and hundreds were injured.

Interestingly, Kashmiri shawls have a rich history dating back centuries. Napoleon Bonaparte's wife was an avid admirer of Kashmiri shawls, owning as many as 60 of them. In Europe, Kashmiri Pashmina became highly sought after, earning the moniker "cashmere." Due to its luxurious quality and high cost, owning a Kashmiri shawl became a symbol of status and sophistication.
