As the days went by, Susanna and Tommy grew very close to Percival. They brought her food, foliage and nesting items. Never was a bird so happy and well cared for. So much that one day, out of malice when Maggie left the cage open, Percival stepped on a talon outside the cage; remaining inside snug as a bug in the rug. So everyday, when the children went to school (for they did not play, except with Percival) she would shoo and tease the bird to flap flap away. And one day, Percival did in fact leave the cage But to her chagrin, it flew only to their school and perched onto the window sill until they left and headed home. Then as they opened the door, Percival zipped into the cage without their gaze and slammed the door shut!

"Tommy look," Susanna exclaimed. "Percival has a new colored string."

Tommy looked in the cage and verified the veracity of her claim. Sure enough, she was right. "Aww," he smiled and went to Maggie. "Thanks mom for everything!"

Maggie scowled and asked "what are you yammering about?"

"Thank you for the new string!" And he reached up, giving her a hug and kiss. Then he went back to play with Susanna and Percival!

But Maggie, again, was enraged!
