Compassion
#WritcoStoryPrompt37
The severely malnourished child was on the verge of death. I quickly set up an IV to give him much needed nutrition and other supplements.
Hours later when he was stable I turned in anger upon the illiterate parents. " Why are you starving this child? He needs proper food! "
Tears dropped down the broken, skeletal man who stood before me with folded hands. "Look around you, Doctor Sahib, the land is dead. We have no food."
I felt quite sorry for my outburst as I realised he had a point, I myself when I had time ate in the staff canteen so didn't need to worry about where my next meal would come from.
I asked the parents to follow me, we arrived at the canteen where I asked the server to give them some stew, bread and water at my expense.
This carried on while the child slowly got better as did the parents due to having regular meals.
On the day the child was to be released from his ward the father found that he had been accepted to work as a porter in the hospital as I had put in a good word for him, he couldn't thank me enough.
After a few years the father was still working as a porter, the family were all healthy with no worries where the next meal was coming from.
I feel extremely proud that I did the right thing and showed this family some compassion when they really needed it, without my help this story would certainly have had a outcome.
