The midwife
They're prepped, trained and ready, with careful hands, hands scrubbed free of infection, sometimes they get raw, safety first for the one you already adore.
Out the babies come, one by one, or two by two, very rarely- a quadruple
They are there to deliver time after time, mainly joyous, sometimes traumatic and sad, so special babies get extra lashings, of care and kind.
There to reassure new parents, they know you're scared, they-calm and steady, there for you-throughout and through and through.
There throughout the most extreme of pains, "PUSH PUSH!", she remembers your name, there to support you with your passage to parenthood, dad looks nervous, the midwife understood.
However long babes take to come, the midwife is there to welcome them on. on their safe journey into life, hearing newborns first gasp and cry.
Whatever you think, they've seen it all, please dont be embarrassed- your newborn brings an inglorious mess, blood, placenta, and all the rest!
But each birth unique, each one to be cherished, after those long nine months, phew, you made it through, grandparents outside, cant wait to cuddle you.
So take your time, push only when I say, lets work together, this is a very special day, the pain is temporary, it'll soon pass, any moment now- theyll delivered to you-a tiny little miracle!
They allow you you're dignity, keep it intact, bring you water, give you meds, check your blood pressure, how far you've dilated, empty that bed pan.
They check by the hour, how are you doing? nearly there now, so please keep going!
They've seen many a parent high on gas and air, nothing shocks, seen it all, seen more vaginas than Hugh Heffner, so please dont fret, keep going, this is nature at its very best.
The midwife will coax you, they see you both safe, mop your brow, the skills it takes! to bring you, your little bundle of joy, safe into your arms- sighs of relief, gasps of joy, a new life starts, mums exhausted, and the midwife they did their part, for that they deserve all our respect and all our hearts.
