The Charming Stranger
The sky was as dark as her life ..
She was looking at the falling raindrops...which seemed to fill her with a desperation for someone ..to share the agony of an aimless life..
The wind howling was similar to the turmoil that was part of her conscience since long.
She was mysterious to people who thought that she was either insane or an egoistic person.She avoided them lest they would ask her about her desolate existence .
What was right and wrong ,was a question ,which she had pondered over...since the beginning of her journey of life .
Then Swapan came in her life, a charming young man , who almost swept her off her feet .
It was a warm but windy day in the month of November .She was waiting for the bus in the bus stop ,when a car stopped by her ,asking her the way to Rampur.She guided the driver and stealed a glance at the handsome man sitting besides him ,who offered her a lift if she was going somewhere along the way .She refused as she felt it below her dignity to take help from strangers .She was really tired that day from office work and wanted to sleep immediately and the man was not leaving her conscience .How handsome was he and how polite to offer her a lift !who could he be !
Seemed to be someone influential and well to do."Why am I thinking about him !I must not think so much about someone !",she was getting conflicting thoughts .
She slowly adrifted to sleep lost in thoughts .Next day she woke up late and hurriedly prepared lunch ,and prepared to leave .When she reached the bus stop she had missed the bus .
As she was thinking how to reach the office ,a car stopped on the road .She was surprised to see the same man whom she had met the day before,who was driving the car this time , he greeted her and asked her if she was waiting for the bus .He offered to drop her when she told she had missed the bus . Hesitatingly she accepted the offer and he said ,"don't worry ,you can trust me ."Shyingly she retorted,"Sir ,I don't usually take lifts , just this time because I missed the bus ."
He said ,"No problem,its my pleasure to help a meek girl like you ."and laughed .
She became more conscious by that laugh and blushed .He might have noticed that and tried to comfort ,"don't feel awkward ,it is ok to take help sometimes ."I usually go to office by this road and you can accompany me anytime you wish .It would be my pleasure to help you .It seems you are alone in your life .You can consider me your friend ,if you can trust a stranger ."
She had nothing to say ,like a sheep sitting in front of master, she just smiled ,trying hard to hide her inner feelings .
She reached the office ,and got busy with work but his thoughts were not leaving her .
The day passed with difficulty and then she reached home by bus but when she reached the bus stop , she was surprised to see him standing at the stop .He was smoking a cigarette ,when she smiled at him and without saying anything started crossing the road .He held her hand from behind and said ,"Stop lady ,you forgot your handkerchief in the car ."
A shiver ran down her spine ,as if someone had sucked all life force out of her .She said okay , took the handkerchief and prepared to leave.
He said ,"won't u invite me for a cup of tea ,Am I so bad ?"
She was embarrassed and just uttered ,"Oh ,I am really sorry ,please come Sir ."
He answered,"Thanks for your offer,maybe some other time ."
"How strange this man is ,just a stranger, then why he took so much trouble to return a handkerchief, Is their something more which I am not getting ,Is it all just a coincidence or something more ,"lost in these thoughts she opened the lock of her humble apartment .She heard some footsteps from behind ,and when she looked back a hand smothered her nose with a handkerchief and she remembered nothing after that , and when she opened her eyes she was lying in a dark room with little light coming from a small ventilator .
"Where am I , who has done this to me and why ?,"she thought to herself .
"help ,help ,Is someone there , please help me ,"She cried in agony with her feet tied with a chain .
Her sobs and cries went unheard .She was hungry and she spotted some food kept near her ,and ate that ,when she heard someone unlocking the door .The door opened and she saw that tall , charming man in front of her.She cried,"Why did you do this to me?what have I done ?"
He laughed hysterically and said ,"Girl,you are the key to my fortune .I want to take revenge on your boss ,who has finished my business ;so you are my weapon to destroy him ."
She said ,"No ,You are mistaken ,I can't do anything for you ,I am too weak to carry out your plans ."
He laughed and said ,"That's why no one will suspect you and my plan will be successful ."
She asked ,"why will I do that for you ?"
"Because you have no other option except falling prey to my plan , otherwise you are finished ,you will die here only ,"he retorted cunningly .
Seeing no other way ,she agreed to his plan of telling him everything about the meetings and outings of her boss , so that he could carry out his nefarious plans of finishing him .
He gave her a revolver to keep , in case of something goes wrong .
Dropped home by him ,she heaved a sigh of relief ,to again return to her old mundane life .She went to office next day ,to be picked by him at bus stop and told him about the meeting his boss was going to have next month.Pleased with her, he offered to have coffee with him as she was now part of his sinister designs .She had no option except accepting that offer meekly .They went to the best restaurant in town for a cup of coffee and he said , "why are you so sullen ,cheer up , you are now part of my team and I like my team members to be bold ."
"yeah, I will try ", she said sheepishly .
He said ,"No one would have offered you a coffee , I am sure ,as you are so plain looking and boring personality .Just be at my side and I will change you completely ,trust me ."
She just smiled at him .
He took her for a long drive ,where he discussed , how he had big losses in business due to her boss ,and she was just a pawn for him in achieving his goal .She listened silently in the dark when he stopped the car in the roadside for relieving himself .He got down and she sat there , when a gunshot was heard and people came running from nearby shop to see what had happened .
She shrieked at the sight ,a bullet had pierced his temple ,and blood was oozing out .. No one could see in the dark any trace of the killer .
He was declared brought dead at the hospital and she faced police interrogation for being with him , but she told them, "I had just taken a lift."
The case was shut for want of evidence and she returned to her mundane life again.....
