MURDER ON CARTER'S STREET
CHAPTER 4

Marissa never accepted her wrongs. At times, I felt insecure around her. She’d speak low of me when we have an argument. My past life is something I know she would never get over. I met Marissa ten years ago through Voshon Roberts, my best friend. We've been best friends since high school and we've grown to become family. Voshon is also a real estate mogul. I had no plans of settling down because every woman wanted me for my money and fame until he introduced me to Marissa during his birthday party at Hyde Sunset in Los Angeles.

I never believed in love at first sight, but in that moment, I knew that shit was real. I knew I had to have her for myself before anyone else did. Voshon excused himself, leaving us alone. I was never one to be out of words, but with her I was. The silence was starting to weigh down on me. I mustered up courage and initiated the conversation. Her laugh, her smile, and her demeanor that evening drew me closer to her. I hadn’t laughed so hard like I did with her. She was different…a good different and I loved it.

She offered to get us some champagne from the bartender and when she came back everything changed. I was kissing another lady. This lady came out of nowhere, sat on my lap and kissed me. When I pulled away from the kiss, it was too late because she had caught me in the act. When I looked at her, she averted her gaze. I pushed the lady off me, stood up and walked to Marissa.

She chuckled softly and handed a glass of champagne over to me. I took it and apologized. I didn’t know why I did that. I was never ashamed of how I lived. This was who I was…A playboy. Marissa laughed about it and I sighed with relief. I had almost fucked up. After the birthday party, we exchanged contacts. I led her to her car and stole a kiss on her cheek. I had been wanting to do that ever since I met her. Before she sat in her car, I asked her to go out on a date with me. She hesitated, but I was happy she said, “Yes”.

After our first date, we went on many more dates because I asked her to be my girlfriend on our third date. I proposed to her on the Eiffel Tower in Paris six years after we met. My mom, Emily Carter was ecstatic and overwhelmed when I broke the news to her. I was in love and ready to settle down for good. I wished I could have shared those moments with my dad.

At twenty-four, I lost my dad in a plane crash during one of his business trips to Japan in his private jet. I became the CEO of my dad’s construction company and after all those years, I’m proud to have made my dad’s dream a reality. My dad had wanted to build one of the biggest and fastest-growing construction companies in Japan. When he was alive, the construction company expanded greatly across Los Angeles to Germany, Italy, and South Korea.

Over my twenty year- period as CEO of Carter’s Construction Ltd, I have successfully established our business in Japan, Australia, Rwanda, and Ghana. I traveled to Ghana and Egypt with Marissa, Emily, and Evelyn two years ago. The ambience in both countries were simply welcoming.

My mom had always been sending me pictures of the places she visited during her stay in Ghana so I decided to also visit the country when I got married. My mom is a Ghanaian while my dad is an American. Marissa is half Egyptian and Italian. My mom couldn’t hide her joy when I informed her about what I had planned to do in Ghana.
