Nightmares of Hope Segment 3/5: Unbreakable Chain
* Dedicated to all the Sister Relationships out there
* Dedicated to my Two loving Sisters

"I'm wearing that necklace today," Sally told herself from under her breath. Each morning that she got dressed for school she always gave herself one decent look from her cluttered dresser’s mirror. She and her sister Hannah shared a room like most things except for a skinny gold chain of a pure gold heart that had been off limits to Sally from the moment Hannah brought it home from wherever it came from. It hung abandoned on the corner of that dresser for at least a good six months before Sally decided to take a chance and clasp it around her neck, before officially leaving the house and risk another lunch detention for being late. Throughout the day Sally received a lot of compliments on her new piece of jewelry, but did her best not to flaunt it because she and her sister attended the same middle school. Hannah only appeared to be older than her by a grade level in school, but they shared the same lunch period. Sally always sat by the window in a corner of the cafeteria so she could read and eat in peace.

This time she decided to pass on the reading because she had a homework assignment due that next class period that still needed to be completed. She'd been too preoccupied with writing that she barely noticed her sister approaching her way. They never sat or talked to each other during school hours because Hannah claimed at home that she had her own set 'set of friends.'

"I knew it!" She snapped pointing out. The evidence of the situation currently flashed in the light of the sun from the glaring window.

"What?" Sally asked
"You are wearing my necklace. I told you not to touch it and you took it right off my dresser,"
"What's so special about it? You never even wear it?"

"That's none of your concern. I told you something and you did the opposite like always," Hannah voice started to project over the other students in the cafeteria. Some of the students eating turned over in their direction to see what the commotion was all about. She reached over to grab the chain from her sister's neck but Sally backed up in reflex.
"Don't touch me,"
"Give it back to me. It shouldn't have touched your body to begin with!" Sally felt incredibly embarrassed because of her sister. She used to want people to actually know they were related at one point, but not at that particular moment.
"Stop yelling, people are staring at us," Sally rose from her chair and went over to the trash can to empty her tray. Holly followed her refusing to let the situation go.
"No, I only knew you had it on because my friend recognized it around your neck and texted me last period about it." As Hannah explained to Sally the importance of the necklace she still tried to snatched it from her. A teacher noticed the sisters were about to engage in a physical altercation and before she could break it up, the worst happened. Hannah ripped the gold chain right from her sister's neck. She watched her gold heart fling across the room somewhere over the floor. "Thanks a lot,"
"It's not my fault that you wanted to rush for it to be off my neck," No one else seemed to notice the accident as they were all lost in their own conversations. The observant teacher though saw the sisters casually talking instead of engaging into a fight, and left them alone to come to a resolution. Without a clue as to where the small heart could have gone to, Holly didn't even bother to look for it. Sally thought back to the course of events that lead to that moment and then started to feel the guilt wash over. "You know what, no. I'm sorry. You're right I have touched it to begin with."
"It's not entirely your fault. If you really knew the reason for me not anyone touching it then maybe you might have actually kept your hands to yourself." More students started emptiness their trays and walking out into the hallway for them to head to their next class, but Holly kept her sister to finish her reasoning. "I don't know if you remember her name or nor, but my friend who passes away last year always wore that necklace. In fact people used to think something was missing without her wearing it. After she died, the necklace was given to me by her mother. I never wore it because everyone knew her with it,"
" -And then I showed up with it to school today," She finished for her. Hannah nodded her head. "Again I'm really sorry.”
"You piss me off to the fullest, but it's not like I can get mad at you forever over this, but so help me though if you break or touch anything that doesn't belong to you again I'm breaking every one of your fingers and letting Dad and Mom know I did it.” She walked away without so much as a glance back, and joined the rest of the student body.

Sally felt grateful that a dramatic scene or worse fight didn’t break out because that would of gotten them both in trouble on school grounds and behind closed doors with their other authorities. She and her sister might continually argue and fight but that still didn't mean that they didn't have an unconditional and breakable bond. Sally regretted her choice of actions, but like most things in life it was and lesson learned.
