A Tap Of A Kobo
Greed has been a frivolous, in the substantial thought of the majority of people walking on the face of the earth. Most actually imagine that it was a myth. Who was actually greedy? It seemed unforeseeable but was it really such a stretch? I believe not.
No matter our sentiments or our state of denial on the subject, we need to know that greed actually exists. It comes in different quantities and moments. Most times, if not properly curtailed can be worn as a second skin. This is actually not the right way to lead, but we may be subconscious to it that we tend to believe it is the norm.
Without wasting much of our time, I will be dealing with the monetary aspects of greed as it affects the youth.
Youths are incredibly special persons with desires that run wilder by the minute. It can be a bit hard for them to sieve through the cluster of emotion they feel. They often go with the emotions they feel at the moment and find it hard to stop the bad ones from prevailing over the good ones. Greed is one of those emotions that is difficult to neglect.
A story of Willow Woods is a candid example of what greed represents. She had the love and devotion of family, friends, colleagues and course mates. In addition to this, she was actually a financial giant. Her family gave her all she needed even before she asks of those things.
One would think that she would be content and live within her means, but that wasn’t to be the case. She craved for more. It was never enough with willow. She actually felt that if she didn’t have the latest gadgets or get her needs met as immediate as possible, there was no pleasure in life. She was too dull.
Her lack of content, drove her into the hands of a legendary yahoo boy. He also loved to show off, ride expensive cars and practically cause a holdup on social media. His name was Mikel Adenuga. It wasn’t his looks that attracted him when she saw his face on SNAPCHAT for the first time. It was the content of his pockets.
A girl who seemingly had it all, still never seemed to have enough. She wanted more clothes, more funds, more everything plus a rich boyfriend to show-off to her peers. It meant too much then. She couldn’t afford to let go of the opportunity to shine. There were some things she couldn’t ask her parents for; it was her boy’s responsibility.
Their relationship started in a very subtle way. He barely queried her if she wasn’t online for a while. When they were connected, they talked about random things. It was flowing smoothly. He hasn’t told her to see him yet. Without asking, he spent on her. They were just so comfortable around each other. It seemed like a dew from heaven.
This is until he asked to see her nudes. She blew hot, threatening to do all manner of things, including blocking him. How could he? Did he think she was one of those sluts that prowled snapchat? She wasn’t a slut and would never be. Her family may not be the Abiola’s or Dangote’s but she had integrity. To think, she loved him and thought him different from the rest. What a fool she’d been.
On and on, she let out steam. One would think that reaction will be the end of their dialogue. Even I, thought she would keep her words and not be lax in carrying out her decision. Little did I know, that she was a dog that will like go back to her vomit.
Mikel offered her a couple of notes higher than the one he normally sent to her, and she ran back to him saying ‘just this once.’ From ‘just this once’ it turned to ‘this was the last time.’
Though her conscience nagged at her, she still couldn’t find the heart to reject the money. The love for money won over her sense of purity, which birthed, greed.
This is a short story that shows how greed causes one to do things one may not want. It doesn’t mean that person doesn’t have but he/she wants things in excess. It’s never enough.
Willow could easily have walked away from it all. It would cost her nothing but she wouldn't. Not that she couldn't. Her eyes were seeing the zeros, even with the comfort she lived in back home.
Did it cost her? Yes! The young man didn't use her for ritual or any of those thing. He actually cared for her but she lost her peace of mind, fighting shadows that wasn't there. She felt dirty in and out and no amount of money could erase that.
Youths are at a prime of their lives were it's harder to let go of the glitters. I believe they shouldn't give up. Get in touch with your emotions, shuffle them, know if that part is right and identify the greed in them. It's ok to be ambitious but to be overly greedy is a no.
