(part 7) - surrounded with psychology
VII. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Today is day seven and the last day of this challenge. I will be meeting a boy who’s 5 years old and has ADHD. He lives with his mom and sister who’s one year younger than him.
I met the mother and I saw the boy and his sister playing with toys together. I wanted to say hello to both of them. They both said hi and went back to playing with their toys. A couple minutes went by and the boy wanted to do something else. He got a bouncy ball from his toy box and began bouncing it on the ground. He did this repeatedly and his mother got annoyed after a while. She said to him, “Alright, that’s enough with the ball.” He didn’t listen to her and kept bouncing it and then he threw the ball up in the air and it bounced onto a table and went right into a lit candle. The boy said, “NO MY BALL! MOMMY!!” His mother came in the room and saw the ball in the candle. She said “See? You should have listened and stopped throwing it all around the house.” He began to cry on the floor while kicking and screaming. “I want a new ball!! Right now!!” His mother told him to go to time out because of how he was behaving. He kept saying no and she started counting to three. He still didn’t move an inch and he was really upset about his ball. His mother picked him up, and sat him on the couch but he kept squirming. She finally said, “Okay. If you’re not going to listen then you won’t get to play with your toys for a while.” He said he didn’t want that and sat in time out. He had his arms crossed and began to pout. Five minutes passed and he was aloud to be out of time out. He told his mother that he was sorry and gave her a hug. She said, “It’s okay. Just listen to me next time, okay?” “I love you.” He said, “I love you too, mommy.”
