The battle which ended in the victory of Lord Rama on Ashwin Shukla Dashami i.e. 'Dussehra', that famous war of of the epic Ramayana lasted for 40 days. After the bridge making incident , Lord Rama along with Sena(army) reached Lanka at the end of the month of Pausha(vedic month)

. Magha(vedic month) went to the assembly of Ravana by becoming Angad messenger in Krishna Paksha(dark phase of moon) . After that for about six months, Lord Rama was engaged in an effort to avoid war, on the other hand, in the event of war, he was busy in his preparations. During this period, there was sporadic conflict between Vanarsena(army of monkeys) and Rakshasena,(army of demons) but the real war started on Bhadrapad Shukla Pratipada(1st day of bright phase of moon)

, Ravana opened the door while making war, and sent a part of his main army to fight with the Vanarasena. In this way the war was duly started.
The main warriors on both sides also joined the battle. Of Meghnad and Angad, of Prajanha and Sampati, of Hanumanji and Jambumali, of Pratapana and Nal, of Praghas and Sugriva, of Lakshmana and Virupaksha, of Agniketu-Rashmiketu, Suptaghna and Yagyakop of the four from Lord Rama, Vanararaj Dwivedi's Ascension , Vidyunmali had a fierce battle with Sushen and in this war Prajangha, Jambumali, Praghas, Agniketu, Rashmiketu, Suptaghna, Yajnakop, Pratpan, Ashaniprabha, Vidyunam waa killed. This caused disappointment in the demon army.

The war continued even after sunset that day. In the battle of night, Indrajit, after being defeated by Angad, inflicted a great deal of damage to the Varanasena with his snakebones and tied Lord Ram with Lakshmana in Nagpash. Due to this, the sound of joy spread in Lanka. Finally the king of birds Garuda came and freed Lord Rama and Lakshmana from Nagpash.
