The office was quiet, the only sound was the ticking of the clock and my own steady breathing. The offer Julianna made lay on the table, a check with too many zeros, a temptation for any other human but not for me. I thought about it, over and over, the weight of the decision pressing down on me.

"A million dollars," I whispered to myself, the words leaving a bitter taste. "Freedom has no price."

I picked up the phone, dialed the number of the district attorney, and arranged a meeting. The evidence was clear, and with the check as the final nail in Julianna's coffin, the case was ironclad.





The moment I hung up the phone, a sense of foreboding settled over me. The meeting with the district attorney was set, but the weight of the check in my hand was a stark reminder of the stakes at play. Julianna's attempt to buy her freedom was not just a desperate act; it was a testament to her influence and resources.

I arrived at the district attorney's office with the check tucked securely in my briefcase. The air was thick with anticipation as I laid out the case against Julianna, presenting the check as the final piece of evidence.

"Cadie, this is a significant development," the district attorney said, examining the check closely. "But are you sure you want to play this card? It could put you in considerable danger."

"I'm aware of the risks," I replied firmly. "But Felicia's innocence is worth it. We can't let Julianna manipulate the system with her wealth."

The district attorney nodded, a look of respect in his eyes. "Very well. We'll proceed with caution. Your bravery is commendable, Cadie."

As I left the office, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. The streets seemed to whisper Julianna's name, and the shadows felt like they were closing in on me. I knew that by turning down her offer, I had made a powerful enemy.
