ch - 1 : Footsteps and heartbeats
The classroom was illuminated in the soft glow of sunlight filtering through the windows. Neat rows of desks stood in orderly formation, each adorned with textbooks, notebooks, and the occasional forgotten pencil. A faint scent of chalk lingered in the air, adding to the atmosphere of studious tranquility.

As I sat reading in complete silence, I heard his footsteps approaching for the first time. He dragged his legs, walking like a child, and his footsteps resonated like a melody I had never heard before.

Turning, I caught sight of him, still caught up in the aftermath of his football match. He looked down as soon as our eyes met, and I couldn't help but remember the fragrance of his sweet sweat.

"How was your match?" I asked, perhaps sounding as absurd as a cashew nut, and I could tell he thought I was a bit crazy. Despite his silence, I pressed on, "Did you learn football by yourself or did you take coaching?"

"Yeah, I took coaching," he replied, retrieving a water bottle from his bag.

I returned to my reading, unable to contain my blushes and smiles. The sound of him drinking water became a melodious tune, filling my heart with warmth.

And that's how our first meeting unfolded.

The next day, as we prepared for a test, I watched him wish "All the best" to a girl named Mythravi. She was a stunning beauty, the crush of the entire school, an angel in her appearance, seemingly descended from heaven. Though my heart shattered into pieces at the sight, I found solace in his genuine smile, happy for the first time.

Seated at my desk to begin the exam, I struggled to concentrate. Amidst my attempts to write, I noticed a few drops of water staining my answer sheet, failing to recognize that they were my own tears. My mind whispered, "If something truly wants to stay, there is always a way," yet my heart couldn't help but continue to glance his way.

My mind reasoned that they looked perfect together, both in their beauty, and advised me to let go of the thought—it was merely attraction. Meanwhile, my inner soul warned me not to fall into the same trap.

After completing the exams, I spotted them once again, this time engaged in conversation. But he wasn't alone; they were both smiling, even laughing together.

"They make a nice pair, don't they?" Varshini remarked.

"Are they in love?" I asked, raising my brows in curiosity.

"Yes, they've been together since the bridge course. By the way, why didn't you join the bridge course?" she inquired.

"I'm new to the school, so I wasn't aware of the bridge course," I admitted with hesitation.

"Even they are new, but they still attended the bridge course. Why didn't you?" she pressed pointing them, wanting me to answer. I avoided her gaze, taking my water bottle in hand, and slipped away without responding.
