Fragile Love....part 1 ( First sight)
#writewithbunny

Everyone has that one person in their lives whom they want but can't have...whom they love but can't express...
For me, Sameer Shetti, that person was Nidhi Agarwal...
I first saw Nidhi in my coaching institute in 11th standard. I was dozing off in the last corner of the last bench when my friend Pawan whispered " Sam, look at that girl"
It was Pawan's old habit to fall for beauties left and right. But the girl he pointed at this time...was... different. Shoulder length straight hair, fair complexion with a touch of darkness, sparkling green eyes with a little smile showing her pearly whites. Not more than 5 feet in height, a simple red shirt paired with black jeans. "May l come in sir?" Oh...What a melodious voice...If love at first sight had a face..it would definitely be mine.

"Sam, l know l told you to look... but it's been 5 mins now. Stop staring weirdo, she won't date a creep like you hahahaha" Pawan whispered again.

Yea ...right..though l knew Pawan said that as a joke...he wasn't completely wrong. That girl was way out of my league. I later found out she was my classmate as well and her name was "Nidhi" .."Nidhi Agarwal".. little did l know that this name would hold a thousand memories for me... memories l can't get rid of even if l want to... memories l want to bury at the bottom of my fragile heart.

Fast forward to 2 months...
As expected, the green eyed beauty "Nidhi" became the most popular fella in our class...not just looks, she was smart, confident, excellent in both academics and sports. And on top of it, a humble nature paired with a unique personality. Nidhi had it all. A pure definition of what others call "perfect"... Guys wanted to have her, girls wanted to be like her... while l just wanted to have a glance at her. Just one look at her would be more than enough to make my day. She became the reason of my 100% attendance.
Well sadly, not just me...she was the reason of almost half of the guy's full attendance. With time, her fanboys increased too..even seniors started showing interest in her...her desk would be the most crowded during lunch and our class would echo in her lovely giggles.
Though Nidhi seemed like an open book, her love life was always kept private which made me even more curious. I stalked her on every social media platform but couldn't catch a clue of her mysterious love life. At last, l gave up hope... but as it's said ... god's mill grinds slowly but surely.

29th May, 2018 ...a simple Wednesday evening in my coaching institute which was soon going to turn into the seed of my relation with Nidhi. Not many students arrived that day...Me and Nidhi were the only ones from our school batch. Nothing special happened during class, just my teacher going on and on about something called "titration" while my eyes were glued on her...soon, the class ended ..Nidhi stepped out while l packed my bags too. Just as l reached downstairs, my eyes fell on Nidhi who was standing beside the door. It was raining cats and dogs out. Did she forget her umbrella? Should l ask her ... wait, what if she doesn't recognize me...but l am the one offering to help, she should be thankful, right? ...lost in self doubt, I still gathered up the courage to approach her...

Hey...Nidhi right??

Nidhi : Oh hey Sameer

Sa--- what? U know me??!

Nidhi (confused): l mean if l'm not mistaken we are classmates right?

Uhh- yea...my apologies...l didn't expect you to actually know me lol

Nidhi: why won't l? It's not like ur Mr. India or something and moreover, you always get picked up by teachers..so yep, l definitely know you haha..

Damn ..you don't have to mention that. How mean of you. ( Mockingly)

Nidhi: ur right, lm definitely mean ( sarcastically)

Blah blah...so miss meanie why are u standing here? Did you forget your umbrella or something?

Nidhi : Yep u guessed right. Seems like l have to wait here for idk how long.

Here, take this. You can return it tomorrow. And if you plan to keep it longer, l might have to charge you...don't forget to add GST.

Nidhi: Wait, how will you go then?

My dad's picking me up...he will be here in 10 mins...so it's of no use to me anyways.

Nidhi: Oh that's great then. You saved me. Thanks a lot Sam. See you tomorrow.
Nidhi hurried off...

I turned bright red as she called me "Sam" but fortunately she didn't notice. This was my first time interacting with Nidhi but it felt like l have known her for years. She was friendly, sarcastic and definitely knew how to keep a conversation going..l fell for her again that day. I was on cloud nine, completely soaked l still kept smiling all my way back. The whole night l couldn't sleep...call it excitement or anything you want, but I can't describe that heavenly feeling. I stayed up whole night practicing every possibility of our conversation.

The next day she returned my umbrella with a smile and a "thanks" and l kept blushing again the whole day.

Fast forward to a month, Nidhi and l have now become somewhat friends. She greets me everytime she sees me and l do the same. But nothing more. I'm just one of her hundreds friends and one of her thousand secret admirers, nothing more, nothing less. Soon came our mid terms. As expected, Nidhi topped the class.. she beamed like a ray of sunshine in early dawn, her smile seemed so vibrant but depressing all at the same time. Sometimes, l felt as if she was hiding something but who was l to ask her, l had no right to interfere in her personal life and hence l stayed out of it.

Then arrives the most awaited and the most exciting part of a student's life. "The auspicious Summer vacations". While everyone was busy planning their vacations l was stressed at the thought of not seeing Nidhi. I thought it was the termination of my relation with Nidhi which never even started but destiny sure had other plans.

14th July, 2018, a day which holds the power to transform the seed of my relation with Nidhi to a little sapling. Dressed in casuals, l went to pick up my annoying younger brother from his summer camp that evening. It was around 7:30. We were walking by the street which happened to have a park right beside it. It was pitch dark but my eyes would never decieve me if it was something related to Nidhi

I, wasn't mistaken. It was Nidhi indeed sitting at a bench lowering her head. It seemed like she was sobbing. I asked my brother to walk by himself and rushed to Nidhi calling her name...She looked up with puffy teary eyes but as she recognized me, she soon tuned away.

Hey...you okay..?

She didn't respond.

Nidhi...what happened..you can tell me ..you know..

Nidhi (wiping her tears): Oh Sameer...yea yea..lm fine...don't worry haha ...I just had an argument with a friend.

I could see right throw her ...she was pretending hard to be okay.

I said firmly " Do you know you are a terrible lier?"

She looked shocked but relieved at the same time.

Nidhi: how did you know?

How won't l? Who cries their eyes out at a bench on a freaking park at 7:30 just over an argument with a friend? You expect me to believe this?

Nidhi: (turns away and mumbles to herself): If only my closest people could read me just the way you did.

"What do you mean? And who are these closest people who made you sob like this?"

Nidhi: Who else will be the closest to a 17 year old? Of course parents. My parents....
They...are...ar..ar...

She broke down in tears.

"Nidhi pls...don't cry like this. It makes my heart ache" (I didn't realize l had just spilled my internal thoughts but she didn't seemed to notice).

Nidhi: My parents are getting divorced Sameer...I don't know what to do...l begged them to stay together for my sake but they wouldn't budge.

What? But why...? ...l asked in disbelief

Nidhi: They never get along with each other. They get into arguments every single day over the silliest things. I lock myself in my room just to avoid the sound of doors slamming, utensils breaking and endless screaming and shouting...lm tried Sameer..so tired..l can't do this anymore. I work so hard, l make sure to top in every single thing just to make them happy! Just to convert our house to a peaceful one! But they! They never even bother to consider my feelings and....

Nidhi kept sobbing and going on and on about her situation at home, l could clearly see the frustration in her eyes. I finally understood why her smile seemed so vibrant yet depressing. That day, l saw a side of her which l could never imagine even in my wildest dreams. A side which she kept hidden just to avoid been judged by others.
The bold, confident "Nidhi Agarwal" l knew was broken inside and she managed to keep it hidden from all of us. I had heard that situations make even the strongest people cry and that day, l witnessed it too.

"Go home" l said while holding her in my arms. And maybe all she needed that time was a hug of assurance that everything's gonna be fine. She hugged me tight for l don't know how long..but once she was done, l noticed how wet my shirt was. I had no idea how many pillows got wet by her tears, how many sleepless nights she spent sobbing but now she had me...she wasn't just a normal crush for me anymore..she had become something else which couldn't be described in words and l would do absolutely anything to see her glorious smile again.

After consoling her for hours, she finally agreed to go home while l couldn't think of anything but her on my way back....I got an earful from my mom that day for abandoning my brother in the middle of the street and returning so late but it was all worth it. It didn't take me long to realise that l had made Nidhi my priority both consciously and subconsciously.

Soon...the Summer vacations came to an end....

Author's Note: This story became a lot longer than l expected so had to cover it up in two parts. The second part would be uploaded in a week. So, if you liked it... stay tuned!
