* World Malaria Day *

Malaria is considered a deadly disease in underdeveloped countries. Charles Laveran, a French military officer based in Algeria, discovered the cause of the disease.

He found that certain colored spots on the spleen of malaria patients were also seen in the blood cells of the patients. He noticed the growth of these spots and the accompanying malaria fever.

In 1880, he showed that some unicellular organisms were causing malaria. It is a parasite of the unicellular living parasite, and it was not long before the female Anopheles mosquito became the carrier of the parasite. These parasites are known as Plasmodium.

Effective vaccines are needed to control malaria. Exactly what stage of the complex life cycle of Plasmodium to develop a vaccine is the subject of research.

An important stage for this is the sporozoite stage. Plasmodium spores produced in the body of mosquitoes are transmitted to humans through their saliva, infecting humans with malaria. The idea of creating a vaccine from spores was mooted in 1967 by Austrian-Brazilian researcher Ruth Nuzenzweig.

In 2002, American researcher Stephen Hoffman used gamma rays to weaken the spores in the female body of the Anopheles mosquito and develop a vaccine from it. The vaccinated rats were shown to be immune; But this method failed during actual use.

The parasite Plasmodium enters the liver cells within about an hour after being bitten by a mosquito. Immunity can be achieved by destroying this parasite if it is done in time.

This type of vaccine, RTS, S, has been developed. The small-scale use of the vaccine was officially approved by the World Health Organization in 2016, and the actual use of the vaccine has begun in African countries. A vaccine has also been developed to stop the reproduction of malaria cells in the liver before they reach the red blood cells. The vaccine, however, is still in the early stages of testing.
