The Special Rakshabandhan
This year Rakhi is special.

The elder sister of Nimit, Nimisha is visiting her paternal home for the first time after her marriage. Nimisha got married in December last year and after marriage is now settled in Mumbai. Though the distance between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is not much but due to all the responsibilities and restrictions Nimisha wasn't able to visit them in the last eight months.

Today also Nimit was supposed to visit her in Mumbai but last moment Nimisha's sister-in-law due to some business conference on the day of Rakshabandhan wasn't able to travel to Mumbai, her paternal home which she visits every year past 7 years since her marriage, from Udaipur. So Nimisha and her husband were visiting her the day after. Ahmedabad was en route to Udaipur so finally Nimisha could come to her maika even if it was only for a day. Cherry on the cake was that one day was the day of Rakshabandhan.

Nimisha had been an ideal daughter, an ideal sister, an ideal student and now she was trying to play the role of an ideal daughter in law and an ideal wife. In all this time spent and constant hard work on being ideal she used to be so exhausted that she could never be herself for once. Her wishes, her dreams became secondary and fulfilling others expectations was her priority, as always.

When during her school or college days when she wanted to spend time with her friends, to enjoy parties or movies or night out which other people of her age were indulged in, Nimisha instead used to either stay at home as her mother needed her help with kitchen and other household chores or visiting relatives for some or the other occasion.

Nimisha was a bright girl, good in studies, good in sports and other extra curricular activities. She was bold and confident too always participating in debates and other competitions. After her graduation in commerce, she wanted to pursue an MBA and then a career in finance as she was very good in the subjects. Her father's friend proposed marriage of his son Mehul with Nimisha and her parents readily agreed saying her in laws are from the same society and rich businessman, she might not get such a good marriage proposal again. Nimisha went with the wishes and expectations of her father.

After marriage when she expressed her wish to her husband and in-law's that she either wants to study further or to help them in their business, she was told that why to bother with such things rather they would prefer her to stay at home and learn to manage the house rather than managing the business. Nimisha started fulfilling their wishes and expectations.

Today, Nimisha was all emotional and she couldn't wait to see her parents and her brother and spend some quality time with them. She wanted to share so many things with her mother and wanted to sit with her father and brother and play board games as they used to do.

After the meet and greet, Nimisha's mother took her aside and rather than enquiring about her well being she instructed her to take care of Mehul as it was the first time he was there at his in-law's home. She told Nimisha to directly go to the guest room as it was bigger and more comfortable than her room and all the arrangements have been made for Mehul to feel comfortable there. Nimisha was supposed to cater to all his needs and to make him feel at home in the guest room and otherwise.

Mehul along with her parents had a sumptuous breakfast comprising of all his favourite dishes. Nimisha helped serve as she had a fast for the long and good life of Nimit as it was Rakshabandhan and as a sister it was required of her. Nimit though had excused himself saying he wasn't hungry and will eat later.

Then finally the auspicious muhurat of the raksha bandhan was there and the Rituals began. Nimit is asked to sit on the sofa where, kneeled down, his elder sister was eagerly waiting with a thread and puja plate in her hand.

To everyone's surprise, Nimit instead lifts Nimisha up, makes her sit on the sofa beside him and takes rakhi from her hand gesturing to tie it on her hands.

Amidst all the objections, even Nimisha, herself is shocked too, Nimit asks everyone, what is rakhi? Their father, with much irritation in his voice answers. It's a sacred thread which the sister ties in the hands of the brother and against it the brother promises his sister to always keep her safe and happy.

Nimit replies, Papa, isn't that exactly what  didi has been doing all these years for me? Protecting me from school bullies, fighting with you to fulfil my wishes, taking blame on her name to protect me from mother's beating, helping me in studies and also fighting with other kids in my favour even when I was wrong, though scolding me later.

I can give numerous examples of the above but on the other hand, what have I ever done to protect her? Have I ever stood for her when she wanted to study further? I didn't protect her when she was being teased by a group of boys and I was not there for her even when her silence was considered her agreement in getting married. Never have I, ever asked her, didi what do you really want, what will make you happy? Nor have I helped her or supported her to take time out for herself and live for herself too.

Saying this Nimit starts tying Rakhi on a teary eyed Nimisha's hand and hugs her making a promise to Nimisha and himself too that one day he will prove himself worthy of the thread.

This year Rakhi is indeed special.
