Lumina Chronicles chapter 1: The Choosing
In the small town of Lumina, nightfall was a constant presence. The sun never rose, and the sky was forever shrouded in darkness. But the townspeople had found a way to bring light into their lives - bioluminescent plants, or Biolums for short.
These plants, which glowed with a soft, exquisite light, lined the streets and filled the town square. They provided a gentle iridescence that allowed the townspeople to go about their daily lives even in the darkest of nights.
One such townspeople was a young woman named Elaine. She had grown up in Lumina and had never known anything but the perpetual night. But she had always found solace in the soft glow of the biolums, and she spent her evenings wandering through the town, studying and admiring their beauty.
One night, as Elaine was walking through the town square, she noticed a strange plant nestled in a crook of mortared stone in the base of an abandoned house. This, she thought, is one i've never seen before. It glowed with a brilliant, pulsating light that seemed to throb like a living heart. She knew from experience that biolums are the liveliest of all plants, the ones most prone to show signs of life to the naked eye, but she never heard of a plant that would throb like a heart or rise and fall like a breath. Moreover, this particular one seemed to resonate to her own heartbeats. Enticed, she approached the plant and in an instant she seemed to meld with it.
As soon as her fingers brushed against its leaves, a surge of visions, too vivid to be a figment of her imagination, run through her mind. Visions of lands where the sky lit dazzlingly, bodies of water stretched endlessly where the blue of the sky reflected the blue of its surface, and where the night was all but a few hours of charming darkness. She felt a connection to the plant as if she might a kin. It whispered to her in a language, strange yet totally intelligible, secrets of its origin, secrets of its powers, secrets that mankind vied for for centuries, secrets of its Name. And in that moment, she knew that this plant was special, for it was the Vine of Sunrise.
Over the following days, Elaine spent all her time with the plant, tending to it and learning all the secrets it has to offer. She discovered that it has the power to heal most sicknesses and bring light to the darkest corners of the town, among other capabilities. And she knew that it chose her as its Guardian.
As word of Elaine's discovery spread through Lumina, the townspeople came to see the plant as a symbol of hope and renewal. They made it a daily activity gathering around it, basking in its warm glow and thus feeling a sense of serenity and harmony wash over them.
And so, in the town where the night reigned supreme, the bioluminescent plants continued to light up the darkness, bringing beauty and wonder to the lives of all who lived there. And Elaine, the vine girl, became known as the Guardian of Light in Lumina.
