Think twice!
In my community it is very important that we use and appreciate the voice and opinions of our leaders, our elders. It is a beautiful thing. We get to know each and able to socialize with each other in a way we know that it is suitable accordingly to our culture and our standards. And so we respect the elders by taking their advice on this and that must be done. It is how we are able to go by each day smoothly, there are hardly any kinds of conflict where there is a need to discipline the kids or at least try and make them understand how this and that must be done. It was all layed out the moment we were born. It was there when I was born. It was there when my parents were born, my grandparents and it goes way back in line. It's amazing how it's been in the line for years and still strong as if it was there yesterday. So! here I am, an 18 year old girl living in an environment as I explained had to accept this and had to go with the flow. I had no problem with it because it felt right. But as days go by and there was a lot that I've seen within the community, the fact that there was an increase number of teenage pregnancy was much more a problem to our communities than abortion itself. Our parents were more concern of our culture that they took pregnancy to a level where it seems like it is the biggest and the worst sin in life. Our culture and the opinions of our elders were so influential that it left these young pregnant teenagers with no choice but to abort the baby or even worse give birth only to dump the little innocent souls in the rubbish. It was horrible! I once said "How could they do this?" but when I took time to think things through. Here I was who was a girl who is very much uphold with my culture, respect my elders and appreciate the advice and guidance they give me, the real question is "If I was in that situation will I have the courage to let down my culture and my elders, my parents whom i adore so much to do what is right?" These young ladies wouldn't know what to do, the fact that people point fingers at them when they are pregnant but will also blame them afterwards if they do things otherwise. And we begin to view pregnancy as a sin instead of a blessing. It is indeed a blessing, there is a new life growing, ready to see the world.
Sometimes we have to block the world to allow ourselves to think for ourselves, in order to think twice.
