Parallelism Matthew 4:1-11
Overview
This is the time when Jesus was tempted by the enemy.
This account is also written in Mk. 1:12-13 and Lk. 4:1-13
4:1
Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted . This happened so that those who are under temptation will also overcome it with the power of the Son of God, Hb. 2:18. Also, Christ was tempted in other ways after this incident but He did not sin unliike a normal person Hb. 4:15.
4:4
"Man does not leave by bread alone" traces back to the time when the Jews was given manna directly coming from heaven after asking for food in the wilderness, Dt. 8:3. This was the first defence of Christ against the first attack by the enemy. The weakness targeted was the physiological need of man.
4:6
The enemy hurled a second trap by copying the response of Christ using also the scriptures found in Ps. 91: 11-12. This shows that the enemy could use the scripture as it sees fit to lure man as if the message comes also from God. The weakness targeted was safety and love.
4:7
Christ consistently deflected the second offensive by citing Dt. 6:16. This referred to an incident reported in Ex. 17:7 where the Jews tempted God whether He was among them by seeking water in the wilderness. Synonymously, the place of the incident was called in Hebrew as Masah, meaning tempted and Meriba, meaning argument. The same situation Jesus is dealing with the enemy. Here, Christ revealed that the use of scripture is wrong if it advocates a subjective and self-centered agenda but it is correct if concerns an objective and God-centered idea.
4:8
The enemy tried the most vicious attack: it blasphemed the glory of God and offered power and riches, earthly things that a normal person strives to obtain. However, this offer by the enemy is gaining the world but losing the soul, Mk. 8:36. The weakness targeted was esteem.
4:10
Christ victoriously ended the argument and temptation by declaring His authority and commanding the agitator to get out and reiterated the spiritual law, Dt. 6:13, that all angels and creations recognize -- Serve only the Lord, thy God.
