I have often heard people say that politicians are thick-skinned and thus should not be trusted, irrespective of the party they come from.

Here comes the power of discernment, where you actually know which person to trust and who should be avoided. Above all, the person who is sitting at the top should be prioritized in the topmost consideration because decisive administration flows from top to bottom, not the other way around. Thus, if the person sitting at the top with absolute power depicts the unrighteous character of achieving his ambitions at any cost and disrespecting the vision for the welfare of all, then no matter how loyal or good your local candidate may be, things will not work.
