Chapter 1
Preparation
Dear reader,
Emmy trembled with her mask in her palm. "Put it on!" Scolari insisted. Em squinted her eyes and peered over to the other side of the room. Scolari let out a sigh and said, "I had so much hope for you, Lunde. To bad you're just a good-for-nothing part of the resistance like the rest". Scol clenched Emmys arm and quickly flung her into the wall, alongside her friends. "Anyone else?" Mr. Scolari yelled, his eyes trailing around the room. "Good."
That morning was the beginning of the day everyone had feared. Not a single 8th grader had gotten any sleep the night before; or at least, not this specific group. In a dreary old home on the side of Juniper Boulevard, Alex stood up and drew her curtains. The diffused light of the cold, morning sun shown softly onto her bed. Stumbling over to her vanity, she applied globs of makeup and covered her tired eyes in foundation. Her irises glanced over to her calendar, hesitant to read the words next to today.
