Freedom is a myth

Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without any hindrance.
But, are we able to do that? I think most of us answer would be NO. It is because a fear of being judged by people are there with us, which leads to restricting us.Honestly speaking, I feel completely free when I am alone because only then I don’t have the pressure of being judged. In my company I can cry my heart out when I am sad, I can dance like an insane person when I am happy, I can blabber to myself, or shout on top of my voice to vent out my frustration which usually I can’t do in front of others. No matter what I feel I have to behave according to the norms set by society.

‘Log kya kahenge’ this line followed me from my teenage and is continuing. If I am not wrong many of us might have heard ‘sit properly’, ‘talk softly’, ‘what others will say?’ in our life. My parents supported me in every stage of life but still, fear of being judged is deep-rooted.

When I went to college, again this 'log kya kahenge' followed me. Judgmental nature of society restricted me to wear clothes of my choice.

At the time of marriage also I have been instructed to act and behave as per the norms of society.
I was instructed not to smile much, because according to society if you smile much at your wedding, you are being immodest.

Huh! I mean seriously?

After marriage, I have been instructed not to be vocal about my choices and learn to adjust. By God’s grace, I got a very understanding husband and family who sets me free to some extent but not completely due to the judgmental behavior of society.

From my point of view, I do not consider doing stuff which you never wanted too, just because of society’s or anyone’s pressure as freedom. It’s like being a puppet. If you are forced to please anyone, that is not freedom.

From my experience, I have learned that society/people will never spare you. No matter what you do, you will be judged. If you are a carrer oriented woman you will be termed as selfish, if not you will be looked down upon. If you are fashionable, you will be termed as ‘heroine’ mockingly if not you will be termed as ‘behenji’. There are countless examples that I can give but then I will keep ongoing. From this, I want to say that our actions should not be controlled by people. If anyone is doing that I don’t consider them free. But to be honest, we all do that, to avoid conflicts, that’s why I feel completely free when I am in my company. In true sense, we will be completely free the day when we give up our fear of being judged and be vocal about our likes and dislikes. As it is said ‘Freedom cannot be bestowed,it must be achieved’. Come on ladies lets try to break the shackles of fear and set ourselves completely free.

Note: This is my opinion according to my experience.
