LIES THAT MOULDED US

She couldn't sleep.

She kept turning from one side of the bed to the other.

The story was too scary. She kept thinking about it.

"Poor girl, I feel sorry for her" was all she could mutter

Abike was a girl of 8years old. Earlier that day at school her brother had seen her begging biscuits from a friend. When he got home, he wasted no time in telling their mother about it.

This wasn't the first time, nor the second or was it the third time such report was reaching their mother.

It was crystal clear, Abike was becoming a "Longer throat"

This evening her mother sat her down and told her the story every Nigerian parents told their children.

This story have been passed down from generation to generation.

The story of how a girl turned into yam and was kidnapped after collecting biscuits from a stranger.

I don't know the version you were told but the moral lesson was "BE CONTENTED"

"Mummy, bola is my friend not a stranger" Abike blurted

"My dear it starts from small" her mother replied

This story touched Abike just as it touched most of us. Right there on her bed she vowed to put an end to it and be contented with what she have.
