My recent encounter with a vicious stranger
After parking my car in a public parking garage close by to my destination, I started walking down the street which leads to the building I wanted to enter. All of a sudden, out of nowhere a stranger in a hoodie appeared right behind me and started to close in on me. I started walking faster, so did he.
Our shadows were cast in front of us as the Sun was behind us. A small bead of sweat tricked down my cheeks as I noticed that his shadow was much larger than mine and had suddenly engulfed my shadow completely. I began to run, and in my panic I turned into an alley perpendicular to the building I wanted to reach. To my utter disbelief, the alley started to narrow down and the side walls began to grow taller.
I found a dumpster in a corner, I ran and hid myself inside it. As I perched myself in the most awkward position in a dark corner of the smelly dumpster, i heard loud thudding noise. I did not know if it was my heart beating so loud or if it was the footsteps of the stranger chasing me. He began banging on the dumpster and yelled at me, “You can run from me, but you cannot hide from me”.
This is when I decided rather hesitantly to fight back. I came out of my hiding and punched him in the face. It was like hitting a rock. He took a swing at me, I ducked. I took another swing at him and missed. He held me by my neck and started to choke me.
Guess who this vicious stranger was: FEAR!!!!
It was MY OWN FEAR that began to dominate me in the form of this vicious stranger. Just as I was about to reach my destination (goal), I panicked and was encroached with fear.
As you saw, one cannot run from fear, cannot hide from it, cannot fight it back. The only way is to FACE your fears is with calmness. Fear compounds when you panic. Fear cannot survive calmness.
