Lost In The Darkness

The cry was faint but I heard it loud and clear as I walked past the dark bushes. My steps faltered, my heart pounding in my chest. It was late, the moon casting eerie shadows on the ground. I wasn't sure if it was a smart thing to stop and inspect the source of the cry, but something inside me compelled me to do so.

I cautiously made my way towards the bushes, the sound of my own breathing echoing in my ears. As I got closer, the cry grew louder, more desperate. I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. What could be making that sound? Was it an animal in distress? Or something far more sinister?

I reached the edge of the bushes and peered inside. What I saw made my blood run cold. A figure lay crumpled on the ground, their body twisted in an unnatural position. The cry was coming from them, a low, guttural moan that sent shivers down my spine.

Without thinking, I knelt down beside the figure and gently turned them over. It was a young woman, her face contorted in pain. She was bleeding from a wound on her side, the blood pooling on the ground beneath her. I...
