Unfaithful
#WritcoStoryPrompt32

Some dreams are meant to come true. But what do you do when your nightmare comes true? Do you run the opposite way or face your fears? Do you put a band-aid on an open wound or do you let it bleed out?

It's our fifth anniversary and it seems like he's catching on to me. He knows! It's only a matter of time for him to put the pieces together. The radio wasn't helping me either. Station after station. Song after song. Exposing my true nature and piling up my guilt.

I Knew You Were Trouble. Cry Me A River. Somebody That I Used To Know. Unfaithful.

I walk in the house and he's sitting at the table with his head down and buried in his arms. He finally knows! No. He's exhausted from work. I slowly walk towards him and rub his back.

"Everything alright, babe?"

He jerks himself away from my touch. It must be work. He's usually grouchy on work days. "Oh, babe. I'm sorry work was rough for you today".

He muffles something. "What?", I asked with a chuckle. He muffles again. "Baby, I can't do anything if you continue to muff..."

"I SAID IT'S OVER!", he screams, finally picking his head up.

My heart drops to my stomach and dissolved away. His breath shakes as he sniffs and weeps. "How could you do this to me?", he says as his voice breaks.
I feared this day would come. The fear I'd see the love of my life breaking down as well as my whole life crumbling in front of me. Tears poured down my face too quickly to catch. "I'm so sorry".

"No", he says. "You’re only sorry you got caught". Before I can inhale another word, he adds, "Pack all of your things and get the fuck out!"

Saying anything else would only fan the flames. He has the last word. I'm left with nothing. No love. No dignity. Now that I've lost my one true love, how can I possibly live with myself?

I walk away without a word. I push on the brakes as the radio blast my eardrums out. My screams and bawls now lost in the song. I lose total control.
The last song I hear as the glass penentrates my temple and chest is irony at its cruelest.

Unfaithful.
