Chagumba
Wow! So baby has touched the books in his Chagumba ceremony, very auspicious....
look how bright his eyes are he is going to be
great really, said his Babok, with tears of joy running down her eyes...hope books are going to be his best friends in future, I pray to pakhangba (the dragon god of manipur)for his success throughout, and with this I bless you and your son, Babok blessed the little chubby baby, his siblings & delighted parents !.......
A five year old boy,
Beautiful and chubby, cute and curious as always......
Was again upto something....In the morning he had collected all the books of his Babok (grandmother)along with her torch, and then he had scattered them in verandah
And his Babok (grandmother) has chased him.... with a cane for his deed, but to no avail she was soon tired,
'Little Thounaojam is extremely naughty and very quick' remarked Thounaojam's Babok to his mother .....
Yes! he is, replied his mother with a laugh, by then Thounaojam was sleeping in his mother's lap after hearing a nice lullaby,
While sleeping he looked soooo cute and lost in the world of dreams.
'But you see our Thounaojam is going to be a great kid, he is intelligent, and rational at such a tender age, as well as curious said is grandmother patting the sleeping baby, He is always interested in books and helps you in kitchen, although he is just five years old..... !
Ah! His mother was pleased and patted her beautiful cherub,
In the evening Thounaojam would listen to the delightful stories (Fungawari) retold by his Babok with lots and lots of imitation and his siblings and he, both were spellbound with the beautiful stories, valorous characters, tales of animals, and what not. He was the second youngest and the naughtiest kid, once he made a catapult and killed a bird and later fed his Tangkhul ( indigenous dog breed of Manipur) doggy with that bird meat and his Tangkhul ( dog) had smacked his lips and wagged his tail happily, demanding for more.
And the Tangkhul(dog) grew tall and naughty with feast it received everyday and later that doggy fought with a cow .... So Thounaojam's mother, tired of the Tangkhul's mischief other than Thounaojam's had to give that doggy to some relatives, where it lived happily creating ruckus but also delighting others. But she knew well that it was Thounaojam's had his share in making the doggy so naughty .
Coming back to the naughty kid, Thounaojam
his mother caught hold of him & bathed him thoroughly giving him an earful along with a bath....
when he had once made beautiful footprints on the white tiles, after he had played in mire with his friends all day long.
then after a good bath he went out again and slept on the sand and rolled himself Well ! To his delight and his mother's displeasure.
But then his mother had already smelled a rat , a smart mother of naughty siblings
and he was welcomed by his mother with a cane .
Once he gave himself a haircut believe it or not it was fantastic, horse cut we can say, but then his mother had scolded him during breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner for the same!
Being naughty yet respectful is one thing,
but while growing up Thounaojam struggled a lot in different stages of life ( due to his father's untimely demise), when Thounaojam was in his tender age, his mother took up a job and then the struggle began for the family, Thounaojam and his Siblings, were often looked after by his maternal uncle (khura), when Ima was in office.
He overcame many obstacles in life with consistency....hard work and struggle, little Thounaojam used to work hard after school when all the children played ..he was to stay back and study in school itself, but thanks to his helpful teachers as well... ........
An inspiration for many people, with unflinching determination he came out as a flame and defeated the winds..... And crossed all the loggerheads ...
And now he is an eminent researcher, kind hearted, liberated and rational with lots of experience and wisdom!
A well well behaved baby..... A blessing for Ima, gifted to mother earth on 15, August 19XX
Despite hardships
he and his siblings did well for themselves and Ima is really proud of her kids . Then why can't we all get inspired and do well ?
Post scriptum - Chagumba ceremony for feeding solid food for first time since birth,
After a toddler is fed something solid .....he is allowed to touch different stuff randomly such as books, gold, piece of land ( soil), rice as according to a popular belief, whatever you touch gives a glimpse of what you plan to opt for in future . Like if one touches gold than that person might be an entrepreneur or a banker in future, or if one touches books than that person might go for being an academic and so on!
For Thounaojam,
chagumba ritual was indeed true, what he touched he really aspired for it later on, that became his passion and with due diligence he worked towards it, not to mention that he is also a connoisseur in cooking!
