To Deny Her Sleep
Phoebe Johnson was like most college kids, always looking for ways to make money, so when a request for the position of an evening child minder appeared on the college noticeboard, she applied.
It were Helen Phillips who answered the door. Upon seeing Phoebe, she smiled. "Hi, you're here for the child minder job?" Phoebe nodded.
"Please come in." Helen held the front door wide open for Phoebe to enter. Once in the hallway Michael Phillips came out of the kitchen and with an equally big smile as his wife, extended his hand. "Glad you could make it. Has Helen told you about our daughter?"
"Give me a chance dear. She has only just arrived and we haven't done any introductions yet."
Michael apologised and both parties duly introduced themselves.
"So, as mentioned in our advert. We are looking for someone to child mind our daughter, Amy, from half-past six to nine o'clock in the evening every day." Helen explained.
"You see, our daughter has a rare medical condition where she mustn't fall asleep." Continued Michael.
"I'm not a medical student!" Said Phoebe.
"All we ask, is that you talk to her, play with her. Anything to keep her awake. If she does not respond to you, tap her hand, shake her, anything to keep her awake!" Said Helen.
"But, isn't it dangerous for a person not to sleep. Don't they hallucinate?" Asked Phoebe.
