A Demon Within
#WritcoStoryPrompt37
The severely malnourished child was on the verge of death. I quickly set up an IV to give him much needed nutrition and other supplements.
Hours later when he was stable I turned in anger upon the illiterate parents. " Why are you starving this child? He needs proper food! "
Tears dropped down the broken, skeletal man who stood before me with folded hands. "Look around you, Doctor Sahib, the land is dead. We have no food." I, myself and my wife are starving, we give what we find to the child but he only wants one thing. He wants out blood. What are we to do but give to the child we love so much. But it's never ending, we are dying from the loss of blood he takes. We can't build our blood back up before he is screaming in pain needing more. What were we to do but feed him. Our last hope to save this child we adore and love so much was to bring him to you. Please promise us that you will save him from the demon that he is feeding. We no longer can give. We have given our all. My wife is dying as we speak and I'm right behind her. Our last hope stands with you. So, as the Doctor I am, I told this man that I would do everything I could to save his child and then I would try to save him and his wife. But two hours later when I walked out to find the child's parents all I found was a man and woman huddled together outside the parking garage dead. Dead holding on to one another. A letter in his hand asked me to take this child in and raise him as my own and never let him know what transpired with the three of them. I have never been around children other than as a doctor and now my first real battle was with this child of whom I couldn't even tell you if he was human or human and something dark and sinister. Because while I was in the E.R. working on him all he kept screaming for was my blood. It was so tormented that I have him the bag of blood I was going to give him as a transfusion. His father was right. That is the only way he was settle. Now I have something to care for that I don't even know what to call it. Now I pray to God I can beat this demon inside this child I adore and love so much.
