Want
Distribution of college magazines is going on. Sound of new crisp paper added to the thrill of students.
“I want this”, said Sam. Neha looked into the magazine, it read “Award - Best Library user”, with a 2ndyear student’s photo. Neha replied, “We still have two years to go, it has only been a month.” Sam just smiled back.
Samantha, or fondly called Sam is strong headed and when decides something, definitely wants it. She is studious but not a nerd. Neha on other hand is a relaxed person but not a ‘go with the wind’. She is a good but a practical person, anything against her logic would irritate her. Sam and Neha were newly made friends in the pre-university course, often called 11th & 12th. It had been a month since college started, and they found each other best to go along with.
Bell rung, it is chemistry. Neha closed her magazine and shut Sam’s too, unaware of the strong will within Sam. Day was almost normal, until break, Sam got up, without even saying a word went to library to borrow some competitive book. Neha assumed they were for Sam’s tuition. Next day, Sam entered the class, Neha was sitting on a bench.
“Neha, I have a lot of homework to do”
Neha, “ You mean the library books?”.
Sam, “ No, tuition.”
Neha, “ Then you shouldn’t have wasted time on library books.”
Sam, “ No, I didn’t get time for them.”
Conversation ended abruptly as the teacher entered the class. Day was normal, until free hour, when Sam unexpectedly said, “ I am going to library.” Neha followed her. From then it became a usual routine to go to library every day, Neha would often plead her , “Sam come on lets go out of the
classroom building and explore college campus”, but Sam would smile and go to library and Neha would follow. Sometimes Neha did get irritated as she would see, Sam would eat, talk and play with friends for 90% of time not only break but in free hour too and would still go to library for last 10% of time, not to return or borrow a book but to study .Due to this, often, there would be an argument.
Neha, “Why do you want to go for last 5-8 minutes, what will you learn?”
Sam smiled, “ Whatever I study.”
Neha, “ Then why do you go late?”
Sam, “I am a slow eater.”
Neha, “ What makes go late in free hours then?”.
Sam, “ Some things hold me up.”
Neha, “Always ?”
Sam smiled and always changed the topic.
“How practical is she being?”, Neha would often wonder. Sam every week would reissue or borrow a new competitive book along with some magazines (employment, news, even entertainment). For Neha, even watching Sam was like suiciding, having a lot of tuition and college homework’s , she
would find enough time for library books and still read magazines ! Things went on, weeks , months and everyone knew that Sam would go to library every day, no matter who may stop her. Neha gave up, and ended up staying alone in class finishing her homework’s.
Two years went on, it is graduation ! Saree’s and suits are all prepared for the world outside. Award ceremony is going on, and finally, “THE BEST LIBRARY USER AWARD GOES TO -SAMANTHA!” It is no surprise, the whole 2PUC (pre-university course) knew it, it had to be her. Sam walked up to the stage, looking gorgeous in a saree, with applause in background . Neha was clapping and watching Sam happily, not wondering ‘what’s practical and what’s not.’ When suddenly everything around
seemed to slow down and in a second, she saw the whole of 2years with her close friend Sam.
Neha saw everything, but not from the day they met but from when they received magazine. Neha realized, how since then, Sam’s goal was to achieve the award. Thus every week she would borrow books to its maximum issue number, even if she can’t study them, that would make the theoretical
statics of best library user clear, but not practical.
Hence every day no matter what, she would go to the library, even if it was for 5 minutes. Though she wasted the90%of time, the 10% library time made a different impact. As Sam would go to library ending any game or any conversation, even abruptly, to go to library. One is talking to her, and
suddenly she would say, “ Will talk to you later, please, I need to go to the library.” And this went on till people stopped disturbing her in breaks and free time because they knew Sam had to go to library. Of course, it was only noticed by Neha, as Sam was closest to her.
Now, Neha knew it all, Sam induced in minds of everyone that she is the best library user even if she is genuinely not. It was a plan of two years, at end of which no one would question her award. Though a small thing now, but not when things are on a hype in 12th. But, Neha did wonder if in the world outside, things happened like this on a different level. Neha now, could imagine the answer that Sam’s smile would tell, every time she questioned her for practicality.
Neha looked around, everything is in pace now, Sam is on the stage receiving the award. Neha now clapped even louder because she found the logic, she knew how every action of Sam was practical.
She told herself, “ Sam, well done! I unnecessarily tried to match your pace. I thought I was lagging behind in competitive preparation and burdened myself but I was wrong. Yes I was lagging but not in studies, but in pro-active thinking or shall I call it construction of a narrative?” Slowly the applause died, Neha stopped clapping. Sam is walking back, she noticed Neha unusually smiling at her, she smiled back. It seemed like she knew what is in Neha’s mind and they had a silent conversation, Sam ended, “ We both got what we wanted, your, want to be practical and my award, didn’t we?”
