You look just like... her," the old man stuttered, pointing at a faded painting.
The woman in the portrait bore an uncanny resemblance to me, down to the pendant I always wore.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Who was she? Was she a relative of mine? As I scanned the room, several other paintings stared back, all of which depicted women identical to me. The old man seemed to notice my confusion and horror.
“She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen,” he said wistfully, eyes glued to the portrait. “Her name was Maria, and she lived here in this very house during the 1800s.”

I inhaled sharply, unable to comprehend what was going on. Something about this house felt both comforting and eerie at the same time. The old man noticed my distress and continued with urgency.

“She was engaged to a man who was away at war. The letters he wrote would always end with the phrase ‘Forever and Always. My Love, Michael.’ But one day, the war ended, and Michael never came back.”

My heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest. I tried to shake off the feeling of dread that crept up inside me. The old man’s eyes glistened with tears as he continued, “Maria would spend her days longing for Michael, and her nights searching for him in her dreams. She wore that pendant around her neck every day, praying it will bring back Michael.”
But Michael never came, and the pain from her heartbreak consumed her. Maria died a broken-hearted woman who never got over the love of her life.
As the old man wiped away his tears, I felt a sudden rush of emotion. I clutched at the pendant hanging around my neck, feeling an inexplicable connection to Maria. Her story had touched something deep within me that I couldn't explain.
I glanced at the painting once more and saw a look of serenity had replaced her sadness. Perhaps, Maria had finally found the love she had been so passionately seeking after her death.
Without another word, I walked out of the house. But as I made my way out of the gate, I felt drawn back to the house and the mystery that surrounded it. I knew then that Maria’s tale was far from over, and I had to learn more about her to discover the truth.
