THE DEAL (Part 4 of book)
Chapter 17 400 meters
The air was cold as they all stepped outside and grey skies were looming overhead. The dogs could be heard barking and howling as they were lead to the crudely made 400 metre running tracks. The butler asked them to line up at the numbers one to four in the one number they were given by another contestant. Cindy turned and shouted “ I am not a contestant I am a human being unlike you and your friend the man behind the speaker who dare not show his face to us” David spoke up and said “look Cindy let’s not make matters any worse than what they are let’s just play along surely these people would not be so barbaric to put land mines in the ground and let dogs loose on us” or at least that’s we had hoped. The butler stood and explained that the bright light they could see in the distance was 400 metres exactly the dimmer red lights were the 200 metre mark. It was sensor light and once it had been triggered the dogs were automatically released and the mines remotely became live. David had now realised this was serious and didn’t feel so comfortable anymore. Paul and Ellie remained quiet focusing on the task and road ahead of them. The butler now produced the bag with the pieces of paper containing the name and number of each person.
Chapter 18 The hardest sprint ever
The butler dipped his hand into the bag and said in a most sport commentary way “ ladies and gentleman our 1st runner will be wait for it” as the seconds ticked by it seemed to like hours to them “David number 4”. David’s body now perspiring profusely in fact so much so that the clothes he had on were sticking to him none the less he poised himself on the starters blocks which were really no more than wheel chocks for lorries and the whistle blew. David set off at an amazing rate of speed his legs going as fast as they could carry him and in less than 40 seconds he was nearing the red lights and swore he heard the traps of the dogs open as the rest of the track seemed to spring into life with green and red lights everywhere ahead of him. This gave David an advantage because he had worked as a mechanic and usually law of physics were that green was live and red was negative and so as he ran he headed for the red lights. Now nearing the 300 metre mark he could hear the snarling of the dogs behind him but he dug deep within himself and from somewhere managed to make the 400 metres in surprisingly good time as he...
