Lost Childhood 12
One night as Sara was leaving the Mitchell’s house she noticed lights on in the house where the van was usually parked. She fumbled through her backpack and found “the phone”; she dial the number and let it ring twice and hung up. As soon as she returned the phone to her backpack it ranged. Should she answer it? - she thought about. No, his instructions were clear; ring twice and hang up. The ringing stopped but then her phone started ringing; she looked at the screen and noticed Alex’s number. She got in the car but didn’t start the engine. Answering the phone with just “hello”, she waited for a voice on the other end of the line.

Alex said, “Is everything okay?” She responded, “I signaled because there was activity at the house.”
He informed her that the response team was on their way, by then he asked he asked her to wait until he arrived. Baffled, she just responded that she would and rung up the phone. It had been a long day for her and she was really tired; she also had to be at hospital really early the next morning. She had already arranged with Mr. Mitchell to take Emily to school in the morning; she just wanted to go home, take a shower and study until she got sleepy. When Alex pulled up she told him that she was tired and had to report to the hospital early; he apologized and told her she should have said something while they were on the phone. She felt really bad because she thought it was something important he wanted to speak with her about but he just really wanted to see her.

Once again he found himself apologizing; he really needed to get it together, his timing was completely off. He wished her a nice evening, and told her he was sorry for making her wait and didn’t want to keep her any longer. He headed back to his car and circled the block to see if the alley behind the house they were watching was clear. Again his mind was on Sara, that is until he saw movement in the alley; he radioed the team that had been called to the neighborhood. He informed them that there was activity in the back of the house; he told them that he would watch the back while they maintained their surveillance from a distance out front. He cut off his lights and parked where he had a good vantage point and was not able to be too noticeable. A vehicle passed by him and turned in the alley stopping briefly, spoke with someone and then pulled off. The lights in the house immediately went off and people exited the house. Alex informed the team that they had movement and a possible lookout in the vicinity. He told the team to wait at least an hour before moving and then call it an evening; he would also do the same. Well, it wasn’t anything concrete but at least it was something.

As he sat there he again found his mind wandering in the direction of Sara; the thought her reaction to seeing him tonight would have been different. Then he thought why should it have been? She had someone and she didn’t have a clue of how he felt or what his intentions towards her were. After some thought, he felt really stupid about what he had done but not stupid enough to stop trying. At least the night was not a total bust; he could report to Commander Gonzalez the events of the night. Maybe with it there would be an excuse to beef up surveillance. Someone appeared to have definitely been spooked by their presence. The hour passed slowly but because there had been no more unusual activity Lieutenant Sanchez told the team to call it a night. After the team left, he stayed another hour to make sure no one doubled back. He really wasn’t in any hurry to head home to an empty condo.

He really missed Alisha but she had decided that El Paso wasn’t the place for her. It was just a little too close to all that was going on just across the border in Juarez. She had made the decision to move back to California and continue to pursue her acting career. Alex felt he needed to follow his career. In the beginning they would call each other every week; the weekly calls quickly turned into every other week. There was always a good reason but when two weeks turned into monthly calls he knew the relationship had reached its end. His was doing all the calling, his messages were never returned as promptly as he thought they should have been and then if he didn’t call, he would not hear from her for months. Then finally he just stopped calling and he never heard from her. He decided it was time to move on. That had been a year ago. Then he saw Sara at the; who would have thought he would have those feelings again.
