William & The McVities Factory
"Will this ever end?" I ask myself as I enter my apartment. Dark and still as it can be, I, however, love the feel of it. Finally, some peace and silence. At first, it used to feel strange living alone by myself but as time went by I became used to it more than ever. At times, I do feel it would be best if I had a roommate over but then I think against it, since I prefer being alone.
The warm shower soothes my tired body and the macaroni cheese fills my hunger. I mindlessly scroll through my social media app until my eyes fill heavy. Keeping the phone aside on my nightstand after setting up an alarm on it, I lie in bed waiting for sleep to engulf me. It's tiresome and frustrating working for the factory though the pay is good. I can't wait to do something more in life, I think wishfully and try to motivate myself that I won't always be where I am right now as sleep overcomes me.
My shift begins at 3pm at the factory. Another day of packing and counting biscuits while I'm studying to count and calculate tons of money, I say annoyed. I guess, I'll make an excellent candidate for an accountant position because apparently Maths seems to be more loyal to me than any of my exes could. I get to the entrance of the factory at around 2.20pm as it's preferred to be 30 mins early for all employee shifts. I meet up with my fellow colleagues and we're all instructed to wait as the guard informs us about our supervisor being a bit late. Great! I say as I sigh to myself.
I stand there completely annoyed and in the next moment I spot someone approaching the factory. She's wearing a grey jacket and a loose black t-shirt with maroon leggings along with a black coloured backpack that's double strapped on her shoulders. Her raven hair is in a bun and if one looks close enough then they'd notice the faint curves of her body that the oversized t-shirt fails to hide. As she approaches closer to the factory entrance, I notice her more carefully and study the beautiful tan that showcases on her supple skin. I've not seen her here before, probably she's new to this place.
She's not looking at me nor anyone as she tries to open the main entrance door incorrectly. She tries it again as a frown begins to form on her innocent face. I hesitate for a moment though I take a step forward still looking at her with a smile and say, "You have to turn the knob the other way round and push the door open instead of pulling it."
She slowly looks at me sideways and smiles sheepishly clearly looking embarrassed. "Thank you." She says softly as she enters the lobby. She's really cute, I think to myself. As we all gather in the lobby, I can't help but stare at her knowing I'm being creepy but I can't help it. I hear her talking in a different language with her female colleagues and for a moment she turns to look in my direction and gives a small smile probably thanking me again for helping her out.
I try to go for a small grin but a wide smile spreads across my lips without me being able to control it. Sheesh! Get a life man. I scold myself mentally. This is like being in high school all over again. I continue looking at her from time to time and I believe she notices it as she now tries to ignore me and shields herself behind a wall so that she can't see me. It's a futile attempt since I keep stealing glances at her.
Finally, the supervisor shows up and hands us our duty for the day. He calls out looking at her saying, "Merilynn, you would be working in Plant B today." Oh, so that's her name. It's lovely just like her.
She looks confused and panic shadows her pretty face as she says, "I've never worked on Plant B before. I don't know if I'll able to manage it."
The supervisor assured her that he'll show her how to work on it and that she doesn't need to worry about a thing. She seems to calm down now, as she thanks him in her melodious voice and makes her way inside the factory. I keep staring after her and the supervisor snaps his fingers to get my attention and I feel embarrassed to which all the guys laugh at my plight. We all make our way in one by one and I don't see her for the rest of my shift since I'm working in Plant C. I've never really bothered to look at the huge clock on the wall until today. I intently look at it and wish for the time to pass by quickly just so I can see her again before I go home.
At the end of the shift which is at around 11pm, we're all drained. I don't see her anywhere and I assume she's left when I spot her at the bus stop. She's waiting along with a lady colleague who I know since we've worked together before. She waves me over as she calls out to me saying, "Hi William, how are you doing?" At which Merilynn turns her attention to me and looks at me with those beautiful doe like eyes. I swear this girl gets prettier with every passing second.
The colleague I know continues to talk but I'm not paying any attention to her as Merilynn's got me captive just by her existence. The bus makes it way over to us and we all get on board. They make it all the way to the back to grab their seats whilst I stand near the door since mine is the first stop to get off. When I try to get off at my stop her colleague waves me a goodbye at the same time we both turn to look at each other. I grin for a moment and get off whilst waving a goodbye to both of them. That night I dream of her and the next day when I wake up, I can say that I indeed had a good sleep.
I look forward to meeting her now and I excitedly make my way towards my usual and dull work. There, she is standing besides other workers with her beautiful face showing-off that innocent smile. This time we both fall in the same plant and as we work we get to talk about where we're from and how annoying the supervisors are. I swear that I've never really enjoyed talking to anyone than I have with her. She's all mature and innocent at the same time and everytime I get home, I'm already looking forward to meet her and enjoy being in her company.
It's been almost a week now with me stealing glances at her whilst we're working or having our lunch breaks together at the canteen. It's been absolutely amazing and I'm out here thinking that I might just ask her out on a date. Yes, that's what I'll do tomorrow, I think to myself. But where would we go? Nevermind, I'll ask her about it. The next day comes and as usual I wait for her to show up but she doesn't make it. I wonder what may have happened to her. It's fine, she's probably not keeping well but I hope it's nothing serious.
The next day comes and goes but not a sign from her which really gets me worried now. As the days pass by, she just doesn't show up and I can't help but wonder what may have happened to her. I want to ask around to try and find out the reason for Merilynn not showing up to work but I don't want anyone to suspect that I'm interested in her. Later, that night after my shift, I see the same lady colleague that Merilynn used to go home with. I try to have a casual conversation with her and slowly slid in the question, "So, what happened with Merilynn? Has she been in touch with you? Since I haven't seen her around." I ask casually.
She answers saying, "Oh, you're not aware? She has left this job since she's already gotten herself some work elsewhere." I try my best to hide the shock and disappointment that I feel when I hear this news and as I make my way home that night, into the dark and still apartment, I let its eerie comfort hold me for that moment as the tears slowly drip down my face.
