furneral of a city: chapter 28
After Molly left to work, Rosalinda gave Paula dinner, that already was prepared for Molly's daughter by a personal cook and went into her room to make another phone call and consultate another couple. Her husband was still at work and so Paula was left alone to do whatever she want. At first the 11 year old girl sat down at Rosalindas Fazioli piano and played the only two pieces she once learned from a school friend. "River flowers in you" and "Für Elise". But after she played several minutes she got bored again. She walked through some of the long floor ways and watched some of the new paintings Alfred hanged out a few days ago, but as she couldn't understand, what Alfred liked so much in the landscape paintings of Jacob van Ruisdael and all the other artists with unpronounciable names. She couldn't understand why Alfred memorized the biographies of almost 100 artists from medieval times begining and New the background stories of so many paintings and was so fascinated by paintings. For her he was always just an old mayor who constantly argued with her mum and spoiled her with gifts like clocks, expensive toys or necklaces. Paula olready walked for at least three times through the same corridor. She was bored as always and thought about going outside, but remembers that Rosalinda asked her to stay inside, so that she would not disturbe the builders in the garden. Who were building a sauna hut there. Paula found out, that the door to Alfred's office was unlocked and although she knew, she should enter Alfred's office withouth allowence, but she was so bored that she still did it. It wasn't the most interesting room to be honest but last time she had entred the room, she had noticed a shelf with almost 80 photo albums ordered from 1950 to 2015. Going back to times several years before even Alfred's birth to the most recent ones. It wasn't easy to deceid on which to take out first. So Paula decided to make Ehne Mehne Miste. Her finger pointed on the album with the ingravement 1971. When more than an hour later Rosalinda finally found Molly's daughter in Alfred's office, Paula was still looking through the photographs of the same album. She was looking at one of Alfred's and Rosalindas wedding photos.
"Darlin, what are you doing here?"
"Is it your wedding photograph"
"Yes, it actually is. Can you give it me please?"
"Is that Alfred?"
"Yes."
"How old is he on this photograph?"
"He's 17."
"He seems older."
"I believe, it's because he was from a  diplomatic family and the clothes he had to wear made him look older and more serious than he was. They way he spoke, his way of thinking. He was in a surround that forced him to be more grown up, and serious. He was seen not as just any boy but as a son of the most powerful and impactful man in the area and future politician and diplomat."
"Thats sounds weird. Everybody else people get elected. But I why it never really happend here."
"It happend. Here in Kies we have a classic system of election as well as standard democratic, bürocratic system. But you can't forget it's a community, where everybody knows each other and where everybody knows each other's parents and grandparents and children and grandchildren. Yes Alfred was surprisingly long in his position, because he really is loved and people are happy with what he does and people just want him to stay in this position. But when Alfred was small. It wasnt actaulyl that easy for him. He wasn't just crowned. Just because his dad and father were impactful."
"But Alfred did not wanted to be a town mayor?"
"No he never wanted. He was an artist. He wanted to teach art and art history."
"He draws?"
"No. Not anymore. He has no time for it. But when your morther was small he draw."
"When my mother was small?"
"Yes, when she used to be a small kid."
"I though he hated her"
"Oh, no, Darling! Alfred never hated your mum."
"But than why does he constantly argue with her. Why does he never support her? Why does he makes her cry?"
"Love, how to explain it to you. Alfred was sjust very worried for Molly. He was afraid because of what happend to your grandma and your grandmother's mother and he was afraid it would also happen to your mother."
"Afraid of what?"
"See your grandmother had a very hard time in Kies. She was very unhappy. Alfred was very afraid the same people who hated your grandmother would also hate you mother. He wanted to give her a good future, but didn't knew how. Your mother was a tough child and hughe trouble making teenager. She brought Alfred every day in absolute frustration. Alfred just didn't knew how to deal with her."
"I understand. But why is he not helping out nowdays."
Rosalinda looked down at the photograph in her hand, as if the answer was writen on it."
Her wedding day. She hould have been the happiest person in the world. She was wearing the most beautiful dress someone could ever wear. A dress beyond any dream. Only a true princess would walk in a similar wedding gown down the aisle. Made out of French satin and lace, it was an ivory white royal princess dress with a high waist a high collar and long sleeves. It was a fully beaded dress ornamented with a pearls and diamonds. And a very very long veil. Rosalindas wedding took place in the most beautiful Chruch with the most beautiful lightning decorated as perfect as fro the wedding of a queen. Everything from the decorations, to the cake, to dress was expensive, luxurious, breathtaking, stunning as beautiful as not the best fairytale couldn't describe and for sure on of the most expensive and longest planned wedding ever in Kies. For a girl that barely had enough to eat, that was glad to get at least two potatoes from a neighbor to cook them and eat them with her mother and family who had to work in the shop more than any grown up and in bad times to sing in the evenings on the cold townroads to bring home at least a few coins. Every girl would give everything away to swap streetlife and poverty just for a day of the life Alfred's Family was leading. But it wasn't the case with Rosalinda. Her wedding was one of the saddest experiences of her youth. It was the day she was forced to turn into a doll. She maybe had not money before and barely eat enough, but she was free like the wind. She had wings. She was able to fly higher as a bird. She was despite everything an absolute happy person. Not for all the money in the world she would like to give away her free set of mind her easy spirit her joy, the messy hair, the very old and simple dresses, she was so proud of to make by herself. The few stuffed animals that looked more like an overused dish sponge, but kept her happiest memories. She could sing as much as she want, laugh as much as she want... But all of what ment so much to her, she was forced to leave behind. The dress was beautiful but even if there would be a thousend more diamonds or if the price would be two millions more than it actually was. Even though she was wearing the Maurer family name. She still was for everyone the same street girl. She felt not like a queen. She felt like a doll that was dressed up and was forced to marry a guy she absolutely had no interest for. Not only was he still a child of barely 17 years. He and She had nothing in common. They were from two  different worlds. He was an economy and law student. Under fully control of his parents. Threatened worse than a slave. With no rights, opinión, or decisión power. With Rosalinda it was not different. Instead of enjoying a life  in royality she was preasured around, yelled at, beaten, but all her effort to achieve the perfect immage Alfred's Family expected from her, was never enough. Rosalinda looked at the clock.
"Common! I Will tell Valentina to make you a milkshake."
She gently stuck the picture back and put the album back on the shelf.
"Rosalinda? When will you tell me everything about my mum?"
"Dear, can you please explain to me what you mean? I haven't understand it."
"When will you tell me everything what happend to my mum. She sais nothing happend to her. But that's not true. Cause she's crying every night. She's very unhappy. I thought it's because she and dad dont understand each other, but that's also not right. Cause they do and they meet very often. Almost every weekend. Like today."
"Mum is not working today?"
"No. She doesn't. Manuel has invited her to go to a concert together."
"Excuse me?"
"He invited her to go on a concert together."
"No way. No he couldn't have done that. Holy Heaven!"
"Is something wrong?"
"Oh no, Sweetie! Common let's go down!"
"So will you tell me everything."
"Hmm. It will take very long time to tell you everything. So I can't promise you to tell you all at once. But I believe you are old enough now."
She took her shoulders and lead her out of the room. Rosalinda still couldn't believe what she just heard. Molly was again dating Manuel. She was lying to Rosalinda about it, so that Rosalinda would not get into trouble with Alfred. Alfred was not allow to know about them dating again. He would lost his control. But than why did Manuel invite Molly to the same concert Alfred and why did he invite her to the concert of her mother, although he absolutely knew Molly wasn't ready to see her mother at the moment. She was sure it this confrontation would escalate. She knew better than anybody else that no roof would be able to hold Alfred, Iris and than at the same time Molly and Manuel together. But of course she had no clue about that part of the problematic constellation that would lead to the biggest possible chaos would also be Cadence Waitang and Barry Reiter. If for a moment Rosalinda was upset, that Molly lied to her and because of her lie Rosalinda was the only one not joing Iris concert. But with every minute she thought about it, she got more and more happy about just staying at home and having a nice bath instead of sitting in the down rambling Mountain Hut. With very exhausted eyes she looked down at Paula. The poor one. It was not fear for her to suffer. To see all the unorder, the chaos, the out of control leading situation, the fights, argumenents, the gossip the depression around her. She was to small to understand everything but old enough to feel everything. Poor Paula. And if just Rosalinda knew partly about the real tragic Paula would face, she would imideatly tried to lock down Paula in her secret garden house and would only lock her up until the situation would calm down again, but all her tries would at that point not be able to prevent Paula from the worst. The worst was yet to come...
