The co-worker
I had started an independent fundamental baptist church in a small town. I was a widower with three daughters. I had been an assistant pastor but had not been a senior pastor. My late wife and I always wanted to plant a church but she was killed in a car accident before we could start a church. At the same time, I got a job working at a grocery store.
I was a cashier. That was where I met Kathleen. Kathleen was 22. She was a shift leader. She supervised the cashier. She was known for her ponytails. When she walked fast there tended to flop with her. She wore dark pants with her bare feet in slip-in shoes.
She was firm but fair. She was tough but nice. Since she was young, she felt that she had to prove herself. The management feared she might be too soft. Workers might try to take advantage of her youth.
She was stoic and dispassionate at work. She was all business. That was not to say that she was humorless. she on occasion was known to burst into laughter. It was usually unexpected.
She did wear pants. She was modest. She did not wear anything provocative. I heard through the grapevine that she was a Christian. I heard she attended one of the evangelical mega churches .she was on the worship team. I never talked to her about it. She kept to herself as did I. Our interaction was only in our vocation.
I had no idea how she felt about me. i figured I barely entered into her thinking. I respected her. I thought she was a person of character and integrity. That was the extent of it.
We were friendly with each other. We worked well together. I did not consider her a potential romantic interest. It would be a conflict of interest for her to date me, a subordinate. I was 11 years older than her. For all I knew, she had a boyfriend.
I had gotten a job in a construction company. I decided to leave the grocery store. they threw a going away party for me. "matt. You're going to be missed." she said. "thank you. I will say hello when I come in to shop. "I assured her. "please do," she said.
I did see her when I shopped. "hey Kathleen."I said. "hi matt. These must be the munchlins"
