Let Your Eye Be Single

Jesus then goes on to say

Mat 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

Mat 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

When Jesus speak of the light of the body or the light that is in thee, He is speaking of the lamp that gives light to the body.

A lamp sheds light by which we can see our way in darkness.

He says that the lamp which gives our bodies light by which we can see are our eyes.

To see also means to understand.
We use the words "I see" to also mean "I understand."

Joh 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

We "see" or understand with our hearts.

When Jesus speaks of our eyes He is also speaking of our hearts.

It is from the heart, through the eyes, that we perceive the world around us.

Our hearts must then be single for our bodies to be full of light.

What is light? Light turns away darkness, light reveals, light clears up things that were once dark. To receive light can therefore be considered as receiving understanding.

However, Light is also associated with the life we live.

Joh 1:4 In him (Jesus) was life; and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Jesus' Life was a light to the world.
Our lives are a light to the world.

We can only live according to our understanding. The lives we live show the extent of our understanding.

For our bodies to be full of light, for our lives to be a light to others and for our understanding to be fruitful our eyes (hearts) must be single, our vision must be clear, our objective must be one.

Our eyes (our hearts) should be centered on ONE thing: God and His Kingdom.

The more we turn our hearts to Him the more light we receive and the more our bodies become full of light and the less the darkness becomes.

David cried out:

Psalms 86:11
[11]Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite (make single) my heart to fear thy name.

We must cry out the same.

If our eyes are not centered on Him, then darkness enters and we cannot serve (or live for) Him as we should.

Luk 11:36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Jesus then proceeds to make a striking statement:

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mammon refers to covetousness or the desire for gain of the things of this world.

Such things are of lesser value than the things of God.

Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mammon (earthly gains) is the god (the object of worship) of this world.

We cannot serve both God and mammon.

We will either love God or we will hate Him. We will either cleave to God or we will despise him.

We will either love mammon or we will hate it, we will cleave to mammon or we will despise it.

We cannot have our eyes (our hearts) set on both God and mammon. Otherwise our bodies shall not be full of light but darkness.

Our lives will not be a light that lighteth the Way but rather darkness that continually stumbles.

Our eyes can only be on ONE of them:
God and His Kingdom or mammon and his kingdom

We cannot have our hearts set on both.
We cannot love or serve or desire BOTH.

We cannot treasure both.

We must sincerely ask ousrelves the question:
Which do I really love?
On which is my heart really set: God or mammon?
