Her Story
Bzzzzzzzz!!!
Oh! How I hate the sound of this stupid morning alarm. It always has the power to interrupt your beautiful morning sleep. Well the only message it is trying to pass across is 'IT IS A NEW DAY' and I'm so not in need of that reminder now.
The sun started to rise and I could feel the rays of the early morning sunshine hitting my face through the window. I really did not feel like going to work today but I just had to go for the sake of my bills. My landlord has been sending different kinds of threats to me all because he feels I'm avoiding him and do not want to pay his house rent.
Finally,I got the courage to get out of bed and I went straight to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I started my daily routine and in thirty minutes, I was done cleaning my house. I went into the bathroom to take a shower but there was no water. 'Gosh how can this landlord be so mean' I thought to myself. Apparently I have been disconnected from the water supply. I tied my towel round my body, came out of the bathroom, took a plastic bucket and went outside to fetch some water from the well.
Another twenty minutes and I was ready for work. I got to the bustop and today was not an exception, there were so many people already waiting for the buses. I could hear the conductors shouting in their deep and shaky voices in a local dialect"Oshod Oshod Oshod, wole pelu change eh oo". It's amazing how they call the names of these places in a totally different way. I looked at my wristwatch and 'yes I still have about one hour before I am late for work', I said to myself.
I was still waiting at the bustop when I suddenly felt a young man's gaze on me. Huh! Not another stalker abeg. Of course he walked up to me and said "Hi". If only he knew I was not in a good mood for any compliment for number trade...
"I like your hair" he said.
"Thanks" I replied.
"I also like your makeup" he added.
'Hahahaha' I laughed inwardly.
'Werey dey disguise' I thought in pidgin english.
I wasn't even putting on makeup.
I was rushing to catch up with the bus so I didn't bother wearing any makeup, I just packed them in my bag and decided to put them on when I get to the office.
"Thank you" I answered trying to play along.
I decided to see if any bus was coming and then he landed the question everyone of them usually ask.
"Can I have your number?" He asked.
I knew he would ask so I gave him my already made answer.
"I'm sorry I can't. I don't give my number out to strangers". I blurted out.
I turned my head to the road again to see if any bus was coming and then he did the unthinkable. He quickly grabbed my left arm and squeezed it tightly.
"What is wrong with you?" I asked angrily.
"Who's a stranger?" He said.
"You're hurting me man" I said loudly. As if that was not enough, he used his other hand to hold my neck, so tightly that I could not breathe well. I could see the fury in his dilated pupils. Releasing my left arm, he drew his hand down to pull my skirt and I hit his hand. Before I knew it, he pulled a knife from behind wanting to stab me and I screamed on the top of my voice attracting the attention of people around. A well built man quickly pulled him and hit his hand releasing his firm grip on my neck. I was appalled.
While all these were going on and I was trying to take in what really happened, a young man in the crowd immediately shouted "Nas what are you doing here?" I could see surprise all over the young man's face.
"Do you this man?" I asked almost immediately.
"Yes I do" he answered.
"He is one of my patients at the psychiatric hospital" he said.
"What?" I shouted abruptly. I was stupefied.
My face became expressionless. I felt blood rushing to my brain from my tummy. 'What just happened now' I thought to myself.
"You mean he is mentally disordered?" I asked rhetorically.
"Then why is he dressed in a suit?" I asked angrily.
"I do not know either. He's been missing for a few days now", the young man answered.
"This man almost killed me" I said with teary eyes.
"I'm so sorry madam" he replied apologetically.
I looked for a place to sit and reminisce, holding my head firmly. I sat on a bench and immediately burst into tears.
This has been the most frightful morning I have ever had.
I was shocked, afraid and terrified at the same time.
