A pair of Broken Souls

There was a time not so long ago when words full of love and warmth were exchanged every day by two young lovers. But now they barely speak, and when they do, the words are sour and bitter.
The raging fire that used to burn brightly changed to a quivering flicker.
And promises they made under a star-filled nights while gazing at the full moon were torn apart.
It was like someone plucking the petals off a beautiful rose and tossing them in the air.
They both felt confused and wanted to know how this happened to them, as it was so unfair.

Their love story began on the night of the Summer’s Solstice. The shortest night of the year.
It was when all the young teenagers from different village got together.
It was the only time they were allowed to mix and hang out.
It was a kind of a coming-out party for seventeen-year-old boys and girls.

Laid on for them were music, food, dancing and storytelling.
The party went on into the wee hours of the morning, with the main event being a waltz.
Usually, before the dance could begin, there was an old ritual which was exciting and fun, as each boy was blindfolded while choosing his partner.
The girls were very naughty as they would change places after the boys had put their blindfolds on to confuse them.
One by one, they chose their partners, and finally, it was her turn, and the boy who was a guest at the party chose her. ( he was not from her village)
It was during this dance that the two young strangers
hearts ignited.

Ever since that eventful night, they were inseparable.
They always spent their free time together, never missing a day, as they were so besotted and devoted to each other.
Their blissfully happy state went on for almost a year when, out of nowhere, their parents intervened, saying that their studies were being affected and that they had to end their relationship.

Both their souls were livid.
Their happy smiles faded, replaced by pain.
Tears fell uncontrollably like rain.
Their tender, loving hearts were battered, bruised and shattered.
They felt confused, empty and alone, and thoughts of not seeing each other were unbearable, and living didn’t matter.
They pleaded their case, but their efforts were in vain. That increased their pain.

It was customary that decisions taken by parents were non-negotiable and rarely ever challenged or changed.
Sadly, their short love story ended killing the chance of blooming into a beautiful romance.
